Arnold received his education at the Royal College of Music and served in The London SO as first trumpet. In 1948 he left the symphony to concentrate on composition. He wrote nine symphonies, as well as many other pieces for orchestra. His music is diatonic and based on melody instead of theme development, and his scoring is modelled after Berlioz, the greatest musical influence of his life.
