Pros: Great Tool for the first day!

Cons: Bad Design with the Transmission

Bought one and would slip on the hammer drill
setting after the first week. Had to buy another one
same thing happened. Crazy!! I love the rest of the lxt tools and the makita's line. I wish they would do a recall or something!

Pros: Lightweight. Lots of power. Lights....

Cons: Short battery life. Gear problems.

Just like the last review. In my opinion, it's an awesome drill, when it works right. Loads of juice, quick charge, one of the lightest drills around, and looks nice. BUT, gear problems like mad. I am one of 3 people that bought the drill from Home Depot, and we have ALL had the same issue. The gears will go out one by one, within a few months, or in my case, in about a year.

Initially, we were told that we would have to send it in for service, which would take weeks to get back. After some haggling though, HD agreed to swap out the drills, even without receipts, which tells me that they are aware of the issue, and I am absolutely certain that Makita has to be aware of it. So, I get a new one.. and one of the batteries is bad.. so I take it back and get a whole new set. So, now I'm on my 3rd brand new Makita. My next purchase will be a Ridgid.

    Never again

    Pros: Handles well

    Cons: Huge gear problems

Bought the drill in October 2006. After six months of use the third gear went on the drill. The transmission would grind under full throttle and chuck would not turn.
Took Makita 3 weeks to repair by putting in a new transmission. In September 2007 the transmission went again. This time the second and third gears with the same symptoms as before. Again this time it took Makita 4 weeks to repair the problem. Now used the drill for a day on the job site and discovered that the charger or batteries are defective. Also the chuck is not very good. It loosens by itself all the time.

I will not buy another Makita cordless again, I can just hope that some reps from Makita are reading this and are fixing the problem.

    Great Drill

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 5, 2006 | 2 out of 3 found this Makita BHP451 Hammer Driver-Drill Kit review helpful

Pros: EXTREME TORQUE, QUALITY FIT AND FINISH, BRIGHT LED LIGHTS, LONG RUN TIME

Cons: THE PRICE COULD BE LOWER

This is the first personal drill that I have purchased. I did a lot of research online and scruitinized the different brands and finally settled on this one. I went to home depot to get a good feel and look up close on some of what they offered. Thats when i spotted this baby. I have personally used my father's dewalt 14.4V xrp series drill/driver and got a chance to drill and drive screws with the milwaukee v28 drill. I have read reviews on all the major cordless power hitters including hitachi, panasonic, hilti, milwaukee, bosch, makita, and dewalt.
I was even thinking of buying the 18V makita 8444 mxt nimh power drill because it's spec torque was also 560 inch pounds. This drill looks great and i hope it won't let me down. I have registered it and expect NOT to have to use the 3 year warranty it comes with. It's made in japan so I'm hopeful the quality and durability is just as good as on a honda or toyota. It has arm twisting power in low gear and if you try to hold the chuck still while depressing the trigger you'll burn your skin trying to do so. I did like a dumbass trying to see if i could stop the drill's torque. i hope this helps whomever is looking into buying this drill.
