Pros: Fabulous
Cons: nothing
Incredible movie
The characters feel real; the acting is superb; and the maturity of all involved spawns an environment of hope for each of us. This is the first film in a long time that dealt with "alternative sexualities" in a way that felt so right--gay men as they are, not just a stage of faeries, but rather the realistic mix of people "you'd never think were gay" as well. The story is intriguing, and while the plot and its outcome are fairly predictable, the emotional tow is strong; you can't help but fall to tears before its over.
Making Love got a bum rap from critics (for being too much of a soap opera) and was not a box office hit. However, the movie, is one of the first to deal with the topic of homosexuality without having the homosexual leads commit suicide, murder, or be dragged off to the penitentury. Major criticisms included: 1)The leads were accused of being too beautiful (which they are,but hey this is hollywood. I don't remember any other movie getting that kind of criticism.)2)The characters are all successful (it's nice to see that misery can happen in the wealthiest of homes), and 3) Harry Hamlin does not take off all of his clothing (okay, that last one is my own pet peeve.) Overall, the movie was a welcome relief from offerings of the 60's & 70's that painted homosexuality as the love that dared not speak it's name unless it was prepared to have its tongue cut out. The Children's Hour, The Fox, The Deceivers, Reflections in a Golden Eye and even Boys in the Band right up through Cruising left us feeling a little left of normal. Making Love offers a reletively happy ending (another criticism at the time- too unbelievable) that leaves one while not exhilarated, feeling equal. We can all find love again, be we heterosexual or homosexual. I loved it in the winter of 1982, because I had just come out to myself at the age of 17. I still like it and have bumped my original review of 3stars to 4, if for no other reason than these 1982 characters are much more positive and realistic role models than the Hollywood gay stereotypes in such recent "hits" as the Birdcage, Con-Air and The Rock. Where is Arthur Hiller these days? I suggest a reunion movie for these characters. Let's start a letter writing campaign. If for no other reason than it could help revive Kate Jackson's career. I love her.
