    Nice package - Poor Performance

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 23, 2005 | 21 out of 22 found this Magellan RoadMate 700 review helpful

    Pros: Good overall design

Cons: Very poor satellite acquisition times.

Purchased one and tried it for a week and returned it after I called customer service (long time on hold to speak with someone). They never responded to the e-mail that I sent with performance questions. The unit takes an excessive amount of time to ...find a satellite. It took over 20 minutes to lock on to a signal. When I spoke with customer service that stated thet this was normal unless I stay stationary for about 5 minutes after I turn the unit on. I told them that I had one of their old Map 330 systems that was very fast as well as a built in system in my GMC Envoy that also had no problem finding a signal and he said that the 700 was a different technology and that it was working correctly. I returned it and purchased the Lowrance iWay 500c and it has great performance. Read more Less

    Great Unit

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 31, 2005 | 18 out of 18 found this Magellan RoadMate 700 review helpful

Pros: Accuracy, Voice Clarity, Ease of Use

Cons: Moderately High Cost, A few More Features

Ordered my unit on Sunday afternoon May 8, 2005 from Car Toys for $799; received it Wednesday May 11, 2005 in perfect condition and just as avertised. Set unit up in my car and programed in my current city and state location. On first bootup the unit... took about 15 minutes to locate itself with the satellites. Since the initial bootup, I have always started up the unit from the last place it was shut down and it only takes about 30 seconds or less to find itself even if I start driving right away. The suction cup windshield mount that came with the unit worked very well but a couple days after receiving the unit I decided to buy the optional dashboard mount (heavy 3 legged rubber mount) so I could quickly remove the unit from sight and set it on my floorboard and cover with a handtowel every time I stopped and left my car. Didn't feel the windshield mount would hold up well to this "on again, off again" mounting long term. Leaving the unit plainely visible on the dash while you are away would just be asking to have it stolen. I really like the rubber dashboard mount and highly recommend it. Took my first out of town trip last week with my wife to an area we were not familure with. Ahead of time I preprogramed in the address of places we wanted to visit while we were on the trip. It was absolutely like having a local area person in the car with us giving exact directions to get us to the various locations. The voice (male or female) is very clear and the volume was fine. My wife is never impressed with my "gadets", but even she said how neat this unit was on our trip. There are a few functions that Magellan can add to this unit to improve it (ie., more POI points, being able to set via points on your routes to force it to route you the way you want, and being able to store any current location as a waypoint with the push of a button), but overall it is outstanding just as it is now. If you are looking for a portable, in car GPS unit that is accurate, dependable, very easy to use and fun to use you won't go wrong with the Magellan Roadmate 700. Note: I have not used Customer Service yet so I cannot give a report on them. Read more Less

may seem pricey, but you get what you pay for

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 30, 2005 | 15 out of 15 found this Magellan RoadMate 700 review helpful

Pros: all maps on hard drive, easy routes to all of North America

Cons: screen smaller than some built-in alternatives

After using factory installed navigators on a few friends' cars, I selected the RoadMate 700 to try in my car. The price seemed intimidating at first, but when I began comparing features of other choices, the RoadMate 700 was one of the few that ...would function similarly to those installed in luxury cars. It contains all North America maps on one hard drive. I can route you across the country without changing maps. It has voice options. It has easy controls and multiple view options. It is as multifeatured as those navigators found in Lexus and Jaguar that cost more than twice as much. However, the screen is small in comparison to those pre-installed in those vehicles. Mounting can be tricky as well. The vent mounts are a poor choice. Best is the flexible neck mount which attaches by suction cup to the windshield. There are issues with vibration that can occur, but mostly it is workable. Some errors exist in the maps, but they are infrequent, and often reflect similar errors in services such as MapQuest. The map update that was release in 2005 helps. Since buying the RoadMate 700, I have had opportunity to try several other navigators, both factory installed and after-market. The RoadMate 700 is still the best for the money I have seen. Read more Less

    Save time and money

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 8, 2005 | 3 out of 3 found this Magellan RoadMate 700 review helpful

    Pros: Save time and money

Cons: Not many, some roads not updated

I bought this unit thinking it was too expensive. But it has paid for itself. Instead of using computer print outs off the web which can be dangerous while driving the Magellan tells me exactly where to go. It is better than Microsoft street programs... because it has more streets programmed into it. It tells me right where to turn instead of looking for small street signs I may miss. I spend 70% of my job driving in my car. I am now able to get to appointments more efficiently saving me time and money. It works in all parts of the US especially extremely urban areas. I bought mine at Costco. I have not seen them cheaper any where else due to the instant rebate. Read more Less

I love the Magellin Rodemate 700! It has a 20 gig hard drive and it is just so usefull! One time it got us to a farm instaid of a city, but I think I programmed it wrong. I really love everything about it! The only thind that could be improved is to ...add a batery pack for older cars and bikes. Read more Less

    DONT BUY ONE

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 29, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Magellan RoadMate 700 review helpful

    Pros: None

    Cons: SO MANY!!!

I wasted 600 bucks on this piece of crap. It often tells me to go down one way streets the wrong way and turns off on me in a flash for no reason - lucky for me I found out the cradle needs to be replaced (which is apparently VERY common if you buy ...one of these lovely Magellans). Atleast 1/2 the time when this piece of crap is working it is searching for a satellite. If I knew what I know now I would have bought a Tom Tom. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! Read more Less

    Roadmate 700 vrs 300

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 30, 2006

Pros: Very fast computations - Auto dimming - Easy to remove. All of USA

Cons: Roadmate 300 may be a slight better value if you dont want all the toys.

I own both the 700 and the 300. I originally purchased the 300 and then when I went to purchase another for my Girlfriend, I purchased the 700 thinking it would include enough to justify the price difference. While the 700 is incredible, the extra co...st may not be worth it for cheap guys like myself :) The 700 addressed every problem I had with the 300. I needed a easier way to change volume without going into 3 nested menus... 700 did this. I needed a easier way to change brightness at night... 700 does this automatically... I needed an easy way to take this off the window mount and stash it while I park... The 700 does this. The 300 only handles 1 region at a time, the 700 has the entire USA. I would only venture outside of my region once every blue moon, so this feature doenst effect me. The 300 takes a few secs to compute a route, the 700 seems to take 1/2 or even 1/4 of the time, its very fast. However, I paid near 200 more for the 700. While I am extremely happy with the 700, and I think its the best on the market in its price range, I think the 300 is a better value if you are shopping strictly by dollar. Read more Less
