Can't get better for the money
Pros: Low Cost, window mount, light weight
Cons: Non-updateable Maps, older maps, unable to choose male voice
Other than the fact that my home built in 2004 and the surrounding streets are not listed on this model, I love it. It is small and easy to take with me where ever I go. The kicker was this model was clearanced by Wal-Mart last year and I got it for only $99. It was such a good deal and I liked mine so much that I bought one for my son who delivered furniture. He loves his too. I have not had any trouble with mine.

Cons: No way to update maps
This unit is very good for the price. After chargng it only took a few minutes to learn how to use it. I did update the software at Magellans web site and have found the GPS reliable and enjoy using it. For the person wanting a good basic unit this should work well for them.

Pros: $167 refurbished on ebay, It's a GPS, address list,
Cons: old style menu, few details on maps, 1.3 mil POI, 2006 maps(or older)
The fact is you can't get a high quality GPS for under $280. I bought this for $167 on ebay refurbished w/ 90 day warrenty. You can get them anywhere from 133 +20 shipping and above.
Basically, you get an accurate GPS navigation system with no great features for under $170. The routing is pretty quick, the screen does wash out in strong sunlight, but will be fine on windshield suction mount(good mount). The menu's are old looking, coming in just a normal blue background(or forest green, brown, or another color), with boxes for Map, POI, Adress list, and more. Only 1.3 million POI. The map display looks like it is from a model made in 1998 or earlier, nothing fancy, just the roads, and POI in basic colors. There is a variety of color schemes made for the map's in the day and for night (at least 5 or more for each time). I like the address book, with the favorites so you can easily load the destinations. Menu items are somewhat hard to get to. The "flyover" or simulate control is hard to find, but I like the fact that it will simulate going 80 mph. During navigation you can tap many things on the screen, the next direction once tapped will show your direction (north, south), one will repeat direction, the miles will change to time once tapped, the next road will show a list of all the moves when tapped, and if you know construction is going on somewhere you just click the road, and click exclude, and it will go around it. Also click the top area and it will show your elevation, speed, compass, coordinates and street address, and some more. SO there are some features in the map category, but nothing special.
One thing I don't like is that it just dings right when you are supposed to be making a turn instead of saying turn now. Yes it will say turn right 300 yards or whatever, but then on the turn it just dings.
Also, I don't like how the map looks during turning, it doesn't look like it turns. It is going the direction you are then the map doesn't really indicate that you have turned. The map doesn't rotate around, the road you just turned onto will just face the same direction right away instead of taking a few seconds and rotating to indicate a turn.
I am not to sure which Roadmate's are discontinued, but it might be.
There is a firmware update for it. Also their is a "region fuction on the GPS, which does not light up, and on the magellan website it just says that the feature is not currently available on the roadmate 2000, which hopefully indicates another firmware update which will use it.
I have heard that there might be map updates in the next 3-6 months too, which would be great since some of the maps seem to be older in some areas.
I don't know of any hacks or anything that can be done to the roadmate 2000 either.
I wish they could update the menu, which is possible.
Bottom line:

At first, I was pretty impressed with this unit. However, after a road trip through some mountain canyons my impressions have changed.
The unit constantly lost GPS lock, and then it was frozen. The menu could still be accessed, but the map was frozen. Even when I got out into wide-open country, there was no activity on the map. Strangely, the GPS signal strength screen showed it was tracking 11 birds!
The only way I could get it working again was to hit the reset switch, not very convenient when on the road. The unit did it again in another canyon on that same trip, so I'm throwing in the towel and returning this unit. This is a really good car GPS, a lot of bang for the ($270) buck. Ive had several Garmin and Magellan handheld GPSs. This one is OK for handheld battery life, but its really made for the car, with the cigarette lighter adapter being plugged in. The screen is clear and bright (adjustable), and the size is great. It is pretty thin, not like many of the car devices that protrude in the back. This model does not cover Hawaii and Alaska. The next version (about $150 more) does. Sometimes, after a lot of use (or in the middle of a very ling trip), it needs a reset. The windows operation system needs e reboot. This does not lose any data, and the device asks you if you would like to continue to the currently programmed destination. One really great feature is probably available on the many other GPSs on the market, but was not available in the past the unit will recalculate the best route to the destination, no matter which turns or roads you take. The older units would get you back on your previously planned route. Im sure there are better ones out there, but this one is sure worth the money. I put a small SD memory module in mine, for storage/backup. The nly way you would be dissapointed if you baught this one, is if you were looking for a top-of-the-line GPS where price was not an object. I must say that duing my shopping, I also liked the Garmin 5i.

I bought this for my wife. She may have been fine with it, but I had the chance to road test it for a few days, before I made the final decision on it.
I currently have a gps in my IPAQ, using the NAVTEQ maps. I can tell you that the maps in the magellan are not as detailed. There are locations that just can't be found on this Magellan that mine finds without any trouble at all. The maps are preloaded, so there is no ading additional maps, until they decide to update them.
As for the hardware, the processor in this unit must be really weak. It takes forever to respond to your commands via the touch screen. Also it freezes up on you, enough to be annoying. You need to press the re-set button, and you lose all your favorites and previous destination.
Perhaps the system I have is too good, but this Magellan did not compare to the IPAQ Navigation system I bought 3 years ago for 250 bucks. There has to be better.Was this review helpful? Yes - No
