Madden NFL 99 also runs in the Nintendo 64's high-res mode for sharper 3D players and fields. One-Button Passing and Arcade options simplify the action for those new to the series, but seasoned players need not worry -- there is now a Franchise mode that will let you continue playing over multiple seasons. Other modes include Season, Exhibition, Custom Season, Practice and Tournament.

During franchise play, you'll need to make decisions on signing free agents or trading for that star player to carry your team into the millennium. You'll also have to worry about retirement, drafts and the omnipresent salary cap. Pat Summerall and John Madden have returned for commentary duties, and a new Play Editor lets you design your own secret weapon.

As with Madden 64, both statistics and season progress can be saved to ~Controller Pak. Anything else worth mentioning?
