Set mostly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, this is the true story of a flamboyant transvestite cabaret performer, street fighter, cook, prostitute, killer and outlaw, Joao Francisco dos Santos (Ramos), AKA Madame Sata, who became one of the most famous personalities in the colorful but seedy Lapa district of Rio de Janeiro, eventually spending 28 of the 33 years between 1932 and 1965 in prison. The Lapa quarter was the home of many African-Brazilians (like dos Santos) who were descended from slaves freed in 1888.

Pros: Interesting look into unleashed rage.

Cons: I felt like the story could've delved a little more into why the protagonist was so violent.

Madame Sata takes place on the streets of Rio de Janeiro's Lapa neighborhood, and is based on a true story, about an Afro-Brazilian tranvestite/drag performer (real name Francisco dos Santos) who fights, steals, pimps, intimidates, and murders to... get what he wants... and essentially spends a signficant number of years in prison. I gave this movie four stars due to the film's cinematography, its actors, and due to the compelling subject matter however, I felt like Karim Ainouz could've done so much more to bring this story to life... There wasn't really much in the way of how Madame Sata, came to fame as one of Brazil's greatest drag performers. There is a performance or two, but nothing extraordinary. I think he direction was fragmented and there was no fluidity. I'll give it a lukewarm recommendation. If anything, it prompts viewers to google Francisco dos Santos and learn more about him.
