Machine Head established themselves as one of the heaviest bands on the '90s alternative metal scene with their aggressive, streetwise mix of various forms of "hard music" (heavy metal, hardcore, etc.), but they distinguished themselves from similar bands with catchier riffs and a better grasp of dynamics. Formed in Oakland in 1992, Machine Head consisted of vocalist/guitarist Robb Flynn, guitarist Logan Mader, bassist Adam Duce, and drummer Tony Costanza, who was quickly replaced by Chris Kontos. Their 1994 debut, Burn My Eyes, was released by Roadrunner Records and quickly became the topselling debut album in the label's history. Machine Head nabbed a prestigious opening slot for Slayer and toured Europe and America, as well as playing at the 1995 Castle Donington Festival. However, the latter gig took place with a substitute drummer, Walter Ryan, as personal problems had forced Kontos' departure from the band. After the tour, Ryan joined Madball and was briefly replaced by Will Carroll before exSacred Reich drummer Dave McClain joined the band permanently in 1996. Their second album, The More Things Change..., was released in 1997; Burning Red followed two years later, and in the spring of 2000 the group returned with the From This Day EP.
