Pro Reviews: Machinations

  • All Music Guide

Trumpeter Marvin Stamm's debut as a leader (he would not head another date until 1983) is an adventurous set in which he is backed by a big band arranged and conducted by Johnny Carisi. Six of the nine compositions are Carisi's; the others are Al Kooper's "Flute Thing," Rodgers and Hammerstein's "March of the Siamese Children" and the pop hit "Sunny." While the 29-year old Stamm is the main soloist, there are also spots for guitarist Joe Beck, pianist Dick Hyman, trombonist Urbie Green, and Mortie Lewis on tenor and flute. This underrated and generally overlooked LP deserves to be reissued on CD.
