Doesn't hold a candle to the series.

I remember watchign M*A*S*H when I was a kid--it was the only show Mom would let me stay up past bedtime for. I watched it because I liked army men--I didn't know it was a field hospital. I recently got back into watching the show and have enjoyed it... immensely. When I saw that the local library had the movie I had to watch it. The movie was very diappointing. Donald Sutherland sleepwalks through Hawkeye's role, displaying none of Alan Alda's charisma or mischievous comic genius. Elliot Gould is equally flat and unfunny as Trapper John, sporting a handlebar moustace reminiscent of Ben Stiller's in Happy Gilmore. The actor playing Blake (So forgettable, I can't recall his name) was flat, detatched, devoid of emotion and disconnected from reality, and Sally Kellerman in her portrayal of Major "Hot Lips" Houlihan was far too vulnerable to be believable--Loretta Swit's Houlihan would have had Hawkeye's guts for garters! The actors all seemed flat and one-dimensional, with none of the humanity that made them so endearing in the series. Other than that, it wasn't bad. Read more Less

I had always watched the T.V. show so when I finally saw the original movie I was very surprised.I loved it!A wonderfull portrayal of war life. And quite an ending as to how they say the credits!Must see! Also,an interesting fact, the theme song,'Suicid...e is Painless',is instumental on the T.V. show whereas it is actually sung in the movie.... The horrors of war and TV

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 4, 2002

MASH is one of the finest war movies ever made. It depicts the horrors of war and the joy of life. These young people who have only seen the TV show have no stinking clue. The fight Altman had to put up to keep the blood in the operating room was epi...c. Robert Duvall's Frank Burns is short lived but intense. And the after thought of adding the PA announcements was brilliant! As a side bar I made the mistake of seeing MASH for the first time in a drive in double featured with Young Frankenstein. I almost threw up from laughing so much. Read more Less

    Outstanding War Satire

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 24, 2001

Agree with reviewer below -- if you're expecting the TV series "MASH" with this movie, you won't be happy. The tone is much different, much darker. Having said that, this is one of the top war comedies of all time. Great situations, great satire, ...outstanding performances by Donald Sutherland, Sally Kellerman, and the rest of the cast. Criticism of the AMC documentary: Doesn't mention one word about Robert Duvall! How you do a documentary on "MASH" and NOT mention Duvall is beyond me. But this should be a great package. Highly recommended. Read more Less

    Forget the TV show

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 13, 2001

Boy, the folks below sure are missing the point! If you haven't seen the original film, then you haven't seen M*A*S*H! The TV show was pretty much a sanitized version of the film starring Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye) and Elliot Gould (Trapper John).... A brilliant satire along the lines of "Catch-22" in tone. Especially impressive when you consider that the film is largely improvised! One of Altman's best! Read more Less

My husband and I watch M*A*S*H all the time. We sit there and recite the show word for word. We love M*A*S*H. If we are at work when it's on we record it and watch it when we get home.
