Pro Reviews: Luv Punks

  • All Music Guide

This 1999 follow-up continues along the same aggressive pop/rock lines of Battershell's 1997 debut, but comes across as stronger and more confident than its predecessor. Titled Luv Punks, a name borrowed from what fans have coined Battershell's guitar-heavy music, this record demonstrates modern punk attitude with New York City savvy. Not too smart and not too crass, lead singer and guitarist Tammy Lynn is at her riotous best on the tracks "Radio Romeo" and "Holy Roller," while "Porno Star" and "Inbred Picnic" are replete with tongue-in-cheek satire. The riffs are bold, the drumming is heavy and melodic, and the singing style is reminiscent of late-'70s underground punk rock. Their rendition of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" is engagingly sassy, with more than just a hint of feminine snarl. Luv Punks smoothes its punk edges over with pop-based hooks, making this disc palatable to mainstream audiences.

Baker on bass and vocals, and Charlie Lauth on drums) creates a sound similar to Veruca Salt, but is more challenging and unpredictable. Formed in the mid-'90s in New York City, ... Read more
