The Lurkers formed during the second wave of U.K. punk in the late '70s with a lineup of Howard Wall (vocals), Pete Stride (guitar), Arturo Bassick (bass, b. Arthur Billingsley), and Manic Esso (drums, b. Pete Haynes). Bassick left the group very early and was replaced first by former Saint Kim Bradshaw before Nigel Moore was settled on as a permanent fixture. The group recorded two albums for Beggars Banquet, Fulham Fallout (1978) and God's Lonely Men (1979), before a temporary split. 1980's Greatest Hit: Last Will and Testament collected the best tracks from the group's singles and LPs, including collaborations with Boys guitarist Honest John Plain; when The Lurkers went on hiatus, Plain and Stride recorded an album together called New Guitars in Town. Stride and Moore re-formed The Lurkers in 1982 with drummer Dan Tozer and vocalist Mark Fincham; material from this era was collected in 1990 on This Dirty Town, also the title of the lineup's debut EP. Once again in 1988, The Lurkers went on hiatus and then shuffled their lineup; drummer Esso and ex-bassist Arturo Bassick returned, the latter as lead vocalist, and the group released the new LP King of the Mountain and began touring Britain and Europe as a punk nostalgia act.
