Pro Reviews: Lucky Seven
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Successful fusion album by a superstar in the genre. James made an art form of short solos, pop-tinged instrumentals, multi-tracked vocals by guest stars, and unchallenging tracks. This album utilized all those elements. - Ron Wynn, All Music Guide |

Pros: Basic,Basic Arrangements And Understated Playing
Cons: Not What You Would Like Pyrotechnical Or Heavy
Bob James was probably the earliest progenitor of what we'd call 'smooth jazz' today. In his day it was known as pop jazz.Take this CD 'Lucky Seven' for instance:James had a backround of TV and film music and that does play a part in all of this music. He arranged the horns and strings too but very well. Two slow songs "Friends" (the only vocal tune here) and "Blue Lick" are actually very jazzy and romantic.Generally speaking three uptempo tunes dominate-the upbeat "Rush Hour",the similarly patterned "Big Stone City" and the funky,bass-y "Look-Alike",easily my favorite on the album. So for all you contemporary smooth jazz listeners MOST OF IT IS GARBAGE NOW!!!If you want to hear some pop jazz with REAL instruments played by REAL people 'Lucky Seven' is a good place to go!
