| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The BMG International collection Love Songs gathers material from Nina Simone's stint at RCA during the late '60s and '70s. This was not the most fruitful period of her career, as reflected by this album's scattered nature: for every clunky Bee Gees cover like "To Love Somebody" and "I Can't See Nobody," there's a beautiful moment like the spare, affecting reading of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," Hoagy Carmichael's bittersweet "I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes)," or her own fiery "Do I Move You?" Simone also manages to reveal depths in "Angel of the Morning" that the song's author might not have imagined, and the languid, molasseslike sensuality of "Turn Me On" and "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" do a lot to redeem the collection's somewhat cringeworthy moments. It's definitely not a comprehensive collection of, or even an entry point into Nina Simone's work, but Love Songs does work as an encapsulation of this era of her career, warts and all. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide |
