Pros: Great tropical scenery...good camera work
Cons: Wanders too much from the original idea of the story.
I don't want to sound like I am "bashing" this movie. It is a good movie and does describe the anarchy and de-civilization quite well. This movie could stand well on its own. Having said that, I think the makers of this movie may have considered another title for it and qualified it by stating that it was based loosely on the original.
The language is quite strong in places, but believable. I think we all used language like that as kids when we weren't around adults...even those of us who would never anmit it.
Back to the movie. I own copies of both versions and must admit thet I prefer the original b/w version. I think it is a stronger movie and doesn't deviate so much from the story. The b/w photography contributes to the almost sinister quality of the story.
Do I recommend this newer version? Yes, however, it must be viewed with an open mind and realize that this movie doesn't really capture the spirit of the novel the way the original movie did. My advice is to get both versions and decide for yourself. Both are good movies. Simply stated, this movie could have done better with a different title.
Just my viewpoints ...
