Pro Reviews: Look to the Sea

  • All Music Guide

Traditional Celtic rock; no synths at all, although fiddle, banjo, tin whistle, guitar and bouzouki instrumentation is softened by cello, violin, and string arrangements. Deep, wistfully resonant vocals, solid, delicate playing, but with a shortage in the energy/vitality department. There's such a soft focus to The Descendants' delivery that one yearns for a little more punch. The group has a reputation for humor in a live setting; here, even the droll, traditional a cappella "Peter Street" is delivered dry as parchment. Still, Look To The Sea offers some moving, nostalgic ballads.
