Pros: Robert Duvall's acting, most characters, scenery, music

    Cons: The Death of Gus

    The Best Western Ever Made.

The machoism of the cattle drive notwithstanding, this is one of the greatest, touching movies depicting the love of two men for each other. It is obvious that Gus and Call have a deep admiration and love for each other, anchored by their many years of "scrapes" as Texas Rangers.

Duvall is simply superb. Watch the movie a time or two intent on looking just for the small details and you'll see Duvall at his best...right down to grunts and groans carrying his saddle, his hand movements, rubbing his moustache, or gently touching the head of one of Claire's daughters.

    An excellent portrayal.

Pros: Wonderful story! You can't help but be drawn into the story.

Cons: The story is long, but the story is always moving along.

If you love western movies and love stories, then this movie is for you. With this movie, you can't help but feel for the characters. Its like you are actually part of the story. You will be wanting a happy ending, but the ending you get is real, but reflective. And in the end, you will want the story to continue. Watch the movie............you won't be disappointed.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 3, 2002

The only thing that would have made this movie better if the cast would have included John Wayne!

Very realistic and had everything, humor, suspense and a great story line! Required viewing for all western buffs

    BEST MOVIE EVER MADE

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 18, 2001

It is so good I've watched it about seven or eight times. I've never gotten tired of watching it. All of the cast could not have been any better. This movie should be required to watch before graduation from high school or College. It teaches you a lot about life. The ups and downs, about how people work together for the same things in life. About character in people you will deal with in your life.
Like Jake Spoon and how he lacked the courage to fight against wrong when put to the test.
Like Gus said, "Any wind will blow him." I have known people all my life like that, I can spot some of them in a heartbeat. Every character teaches, about people you will encounter in life. It also teaches you that hard work and sticking with a task will pay off in the end.
I could go on almost as long as the movie last.

Long But Very Good Western Movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 25, 2000

This movie slowly develops its story line in several fronts which all slowly converge toward the end. Since it is a western movie, there are cowboys, indians, outlaws, bar girls, and shooting. But shooting is not a significant part of the movie. I like the movie but be warned that you will have to be patient to sit through 5 hours to see where every thing leads to.

    Greatest Westen Ever Made

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 28, 2000

Lonesome Dove is one of the most entertaining, engrossing, & powerful films I've ever seen.
The best acting of the cast members careers, especially Robert Duval in what he calls "his best role."

Easily the finest achievment of the western genre. Right up there will The Searchers, High Noon, and Dances With Wolves. It reinvents the western.

    Lonesome Dove

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 16, 2000

I believe this to be the BEST western ever made. Being a history "buff", I really enjoy the historical accuracy in the manner of dress, speech and firearms used in the film. Both Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones brought the characters from the book to life for me and have made re-reading the book a joy. It was a wonderfull experience to see this movie stick so close to the book. I never get tired of watching this great epic.

    Accurate to the Book.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 2, 2000

For those of you who are lonesome dove (the book fans), this is accurate to the book and has the additional benefit of top notch actors (The Fugitive' Tommy Lee Jones). Nothing more to say, if you loved the book, the movie is fun too.

If you have never read lonesome dove, watch the movie. quickly: it is the tale of two indian scouts who have got themselves in a rut on the rio grande herding cattle in a makeshift operation and decide to take hold of their lives in their forties and journey across country to montana with a rag tag but loyal crew. this is truley a cowboy epic and depicts the settling of the west...the ultimate american walkabout is a must see, entertaining each scene. clean, engaging...comparable to "the winds of war". i.e. an epic.

Absolutely the Best Movie Ever Made!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 22, 2000

Anyone who has watched this movie with me, I have said "Give it 15 minutes." They have all watched it in it's entirety and enjoyed every minute of the 6 hour epic! The characters are so real and vivid. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall are excellent in the roles of Captains Call and McCrea. Each one, truely loveable in his own right. Many intricacies involved in the story to keep you wanting more and interested the whole movie. For anyone that enjoys a great movie, this is an excellent choice.

Faithful to the Book but Made For T.V.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 1, 2000 | 0 out of 1 found this Lonesome Dove (1990) review helpful

At first I was unable to accept the casting of Robert Duval in the role of the gregarious Gus, and had an equally hard time with Tommy Lee Jones as Capt. Call. With time however, I learned to accept the actors in their roles and even to appreciate that Duval was cast against type. I still think he would have been better as the stern Capt. Call. The movie suffers chiefly from the fact that it was made for T.V. and has the look and feel of a T. V. Mini Series, including the cliff hanger endings to each segment. I once saw a "making of Lonesome Dove " video that revealed that the book had originally been written as a movie vehicle for John Wayne and Henry Fonda. What a fantastic pairing in the lead roles that would have been!
For diehard Lonesome Dove fans its a must see. For all others its a really really long movie.
