Pro Reviews: London Suites

  • All Music Guide

In 1938 and 1939, Fats Waller sailed to Great Britain, making guest appearances with English musicians because of union rules which prevented him from touring with his American group. The music in this CD compilation, which has been reissued by various labels under different titles, is quite enjoyable. But the mastering on this edition is rather uneven, while the lack of musician or composer credits (though there was room to print the song list in three separate places) is simply ridiculous. That said, the local musicians fit in beautifully in place of Waller's regular group, in the exuberant interpretation of the novelty hit "The Flat Foot Floogie," with the pianist shouting out encouragement or teasing them in turn. He provides perfect backing on pipe organ for vocalist Adelaide Hall in "That Old Feeling" and "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," showing of his chops on the giant instrument without overwhelming her, though he can't resist adding a few vocal asides. Waller is also fea...tured on pipe organ on a number of selections, some with vocals, but his improvised piano impressions (which he titled "London Suite") mark the highlight of this collection. Although these selections were recorded at a very low level, they stand the test of time rather well, especially "Bond Street," the pianist's conception of a day in the life of a London prostitute. - Ken Dryden, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Fats Waller

Not only was Fats Waller one of the greatest pianists jazz has ever known, he was also one of its most exuberantly funny entertainers and as so often happens, one facet tends to obscure the other. His extraordinarily light and flexible touch belied his ample physical girth; he could swing as hard as any pianist alive or dead in his classic James P. Johnsonderived strid... Read more
