In the process, Jeremy Irons gives an amazing, tortured performance as Humbert Humbert, the professor who can not control his physical desires for 12-year-old Dolores Haze (Dominique Swain). Swain also turns in an exceptional performance as the title character. Controversy surrounded the production to the point where it languished, completed, on the shelf, for almost two years looking for an American distributor. The film had a successful European run before making its American debut on the Showtime cable network, and finally, to a limited art-house run.

    Provacativeness other's won't touch

You've all seen the Skinamax/HBWoe/Woetime late evening thing about the guy that sleeps with the Baby sitter, etc. What I like about Lolita is that it taps into this same desire in a much deeper, artistic, way as to bring to light the deep intracaci...es in these characters and make a social comment about a topic most are afraid to discuss.Young girls are taught to be flirtacious and cute. They are modeled this by their real life and media role models. Yet men are supposed to not be aroused by them. What is disturbing about this film is that they make this girl arousing. Unfortuneately I don't think most people look deeper into why they are aroused. They write it off by saying what a sick character the guy is as a way to cover for their arousal. This movie raises a lot of impportant questions about sex, age, lonliness, and paranoia. Read more Less

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. It truly got to me. Some parts were indeed disturbing, but they don't detract from the picture, they only show how desperate and sad the story really is. Jeremy Irons is heart wrenching and the rest o...f the cast also give good performances. Also has quite a beautiful score and gorgeous cinematography. Read more Less
