Pro Reviews: Lizzy McGuire [Original Television Soundtrack]

  • All Music Guide

With its mix of teen pop and the occasional alt-rock single, the soundtrack to ABC's popular live action/animated Saturday morning show Lizzie McGuire is actually less interesting than the music the series features each week. Songs like Jump 5's "All I Can Do," Play's "Us Against the World," and Dana Dawson's "Have a Nice Life" blur together into a mass of saccharine pop, while latter-day teen divas Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore duke it out with "Irresistible" and "Walk Me Home," their respective swooning, sensitive ballads. It's the soundtrack's more upbeat, rock-inspired moments that capture the kooky fun of the show; in particular, Wiseguys' overexposed but still enjoyable "Start the Commotion," Fan_3's hip-hop goof "What They Gonna Think," and the Jackson 5's classic "ABC" suggest Lizzie's happy-go-lucky spirit. Die-hard fans of the show will also be pleased by the inclusion of the jangly theme song, as well as Hilary Duff (aka Lizzie)'s singing debut, "I Can't Wait," which fortu...nately sounds more like Hoku or Vitamin C than any of the other teen pop included here. Still, Lizzie, Gordo, and Miranda seem more individualistic than the music that represents them on this collection, even if this is exactly what fans of the show want to hear. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide Read more Less
