Pro Reviews: Living on the Hallelujah Side
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Paul Williams got his start playing mandolin with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Jimmy Martin over 50 years ago. After retiring from professional music in 1963, he continued playing gospel music regionally. In the late 1990s, however, Williams' career got a jump start when he released a series of well-received albums. Living on the Hallelujah Side follows the same footpath, featuring a combination of traditional gospel singing and bluegrass picking. Williams is joined by rhythm guitarist Jeff Orr, banjoist Jerry Keys, guitarist Ned Cutshaw, fiddler Keith Williams, and bassist Susie Keys for a handful of old and new gospel songs. The straightforward arrangements offer just the right support for the material and help keep the spotlight on the vocals. Williams, Orr, and Cutshaw specialize in two- and three-part harmony, filling songs like "Whispering Hope" and the title cut with a "joyful noise." While Williams and company never deviate from the righteous path, they do mix other subjects with their gospel vision. "I'll Owe It to My Mother and Dad" pays homage to good parenting and traditional values, while "Liberty and Justice for All" expresses a deeply felt patriotism. For old fans, Living on the Hallelujah Side will be another fine entry in Williams' catalog. For anyone else interested in gospel music but unfamiliar with Williams, it will be a good place to start. - Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide |

Dont be confused by the five songs credited to Paul Humphrey (thats just Paul Williams real name). Dont be confused that the Victory Trio is actually a quintet of Jerry Keys (banjo), Ned Cutshaw (guitar), Jeff Orr (rhythm guitar), Susie Keys (bass), and Keith Williams (fiddle). Originally from Virginia but now living in Tennessee, former Lonesome Pine Fiddler (and Sunny Mountain Boy) Paul Williams left bluegrass music in 1963 to pursue a career with the U.S. Postal Service. Now retired, Williams is back performing and recording to make up for lost time. With his Victory Trio since 1998, some impressive projects have been coming out from Paul on the Rebel Record label. Living On The Hallelujah Side is his ninth album since his reappearance in 1996. Paul continues to play his music in a traditional style that hes known for. He also continues to spread his ministry through music.
The band has developed a signature sound and strong reputation for fine bluegrass gospel that emphasizes a good selection of original and lesser-recorded material. This project also includes the song, Liberty And Justice For All with its messages of faith in God, pride of being American, and love of our Nation. The prolific Paul Williams and the Victory Trio are a first-class act, and they have another winner with Living On The Hallelujah Side. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now) ...
