Pro Reviews: Little Women [Original Broadway Cast]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Little Women, the Musical, by Jason Howland and Mindi Dickstein, is a passable attempt to enact Louisa May Alcott's classic book. It captures very well the enthusiasm of the young characters and avoids indulgent sentimentality, even as it hits all the obvious emotional buttons. However, the music is too Broadway for the story, beginning with the use of clichéd shimmering cymbals and bells to indicate a magical experience. Its gestures are on a broad scale, even in the more tender moments, which really does not fit with the overall humble tone of the original book. It is not immediately memorable, either, giving the listener nothing to latch onto melodically or structurally, although it is engaging as it is heard. The best of the music is the parody of Phantom of the Opera in the guise of one of Jo's penny dreadful stories entwined in the song "The Weekly Volcano Press." The skills of the cast, headed by Broadway veterans Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern, does a lot for the music. All of them do a firstrate job, although it is not without nitpicking flaws (Foster's vocal quality is not always consistent; John Hickok as Prof. Bhaer can't decide whether or not to use the German accent when singing). McGovern is excellent, as expected, but the Marmee character, with two solo songs, seems out of place with the story, which is meant to revolve around Jo and her sisters. Without a talented cast, however, Little Women, the Musical does not seemed destined to become the classic that the original book is. |
