    Pros: Impressive vocalizing; Crafty songwriting

Cons: A little hotter dobro in the mix needed here and there

Playing Time – 46:30 -- Bluegrass aficionados have no doubt heard of The Fox Family and Kim Fox Band. Now, you’d better sit down and get ready for impressive showcase of 3 Fox Drive. Originally from the Adirondack Mountains of New York, the brother... and two sisters (Joel, Kim and Barb) won the 1989 Winterhawk festival bluegrass band contest. Kim Fox, you may recall, is a prolific songwriter who won the prestigious songwriting contest at Merlefest in 1994. In the year 2000, The Fox Family became the Kim Fox Band (Kim, Joel, bassist Andrea Roberts, and fiddler Jesse Cobb). The clever Foxes have now embarked on a new path of musical ingenuity that emphasizes cunning acoustic keenness. Seven songs bear the mark of Kim Fox’s crafty songwriting, with each having their own distinctive flavorings but still being mainly easy listening country and folk fare. • All Music Guide

Perhaps the first thing one will notice about 3 Fox Drive is that there are six members in the group, and that doesn't even count the musicians who are sitting in with the band. If this seems like a lot of people, especially for an acoustic assembly, that's because it is. In a way, it's as though 3 Fox Drive are two bands in one on Listen to the Music, one part concentrating on solid instrumental work, the other providing both lead and harmony vocals. And while plenty of acousticbased bands offer both good musicianship and stellar vocals, the real difference here is that both of the lead vocalists are women. Both Kim and Barb Fox provide lead vocals and support one another on harmony, while Joel Fox when the choruses kick into high gear also adds his voice to the mix. The opening cut, Tom Johnston's "Listen to the Music," gets the album off to a perky start. There's a nice version of Shelby Lynne/Stephanie Davis/Brent Maher's "Slow Me Down," and some solid originals "Short Walk to t...he Moon" and "Cold at the Bottom of Your Heart" by Kim Fox. Bassist Mike Anglin, mandolinist Jim Reed, and fiddler Megan Lynch along with a couple guests offer fine support on all of these songs. With 3 Fox Drive's combination of topnotch vocals, a bright acoustic underpinning, and a good set of songs, Listen to the Music is an enjoyable introduction to the band. - Ronnie D.
