Pro Reviews: Liquid Funk

  • All Music Guide

After a slew of singles and EPs, Aubrey (aka Allen Saei) gets his full-length debut courtesy of Leftfield's Offshoot label. Liquid Funk is an album of Chicago-ish house, with all the intricate percussion and heavenly synth you'd expect from Larry Heard or other Windy City pioneers. The title track and "Bass Overlord" are highlights, and though Aubrey never quite expands the palette originally set in the late '80s by producers like Heard, Liquid Funk is a pleasant listen for devotees of classic house and for listeners used to harder music but aching for a break from distortion and experimentation.
