The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera sends live video with sound through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace - whatever's important to you. Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Video Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-frame rate, up to 640x480 audio/video stream.

The Internet Video Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any PC in the house, while the audio/video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. If you want the video to be visible from outside your home network, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. The SoloLink domain service (trial sign-up included) lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even if your home Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address.

You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.

Let the Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera help you keep tabs on your world.

For the price its the best on the market

    Pros: Good picture, sensitive microphone

    Cons: Installation is tricky

I have a Netgear wireless pc card, a D Link wireless router and the Liinksys camera, i couldnt remember the codes, SSID numbers for the router etc. It took about 30 minutes to set the camera on my home netwrok, with help from a call center in India ...and another 30 minutes to set it up on the internet. Customer service from Linksys and from D Link were incredibly helpful, as was their web sites with faqs. The camera has a fairly good picture and the sound works well, the internet requires the router ports be set to 1024, the SSID on the camera and the router must be identical. Read more Less

    lREMOTE MONITORING !!!

By Robert  Apr 1, 2006 | 2 out of 2 found this Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera WVC54GCA review helpful

Pros: Works as advertised - JUST BOUGHT MY 2nd ONE.

Cons: RTFM: People that don't know how to set it up give it a bad rap.

My first camera took 20 minutes to set up, 5 minutes to enroll with the DDNS 90-day trial. You will probably need to take a week to play with it to tweak the little things to your liking. I get Cell phone & PC email notifications with video clips fro...m the view out my living room window. At work, during the day, I monitor the cam AUDIO on one of my PCs (screen minimized, but audio still active). Doorbell rings, knocks at my door as well as (heaven forbid) my home alarm going off can be heard easily. I EVEN get an EMAIL notification on my phone when the SNAILMAIL mailman walks by one of the cam zones set to trigger this feature. ISN'T TECHNOLOGY GREAT!! JUST BOUGHT MY 2ND WVC54G, and I added it to my existing SoloLink DDNS service at no extra charge. I'll use my 2nd 90-day free trial after my first one runs out. WARNING: If you don't know what a router is, if you don't know if you have a static or dynamic ip, if you don't know what your UP/Down bandwidth speeds are ... PLEASE, PLEASE RTFM before you slam the product. FYI: DON'T UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE (unless it's 12.X or above) OR YOU'LL LOSE EMAIL NOTIFICATION FUNCTIONALITY. You can always downgrade back to the original firmware of 2.07 like I did. READ THE NET FORUMS FOR THE DETAILS ABOUT THIS. I never have needed to call Linksys Tech Support (yet), since I have heard the horror stories of their third-world support ... Just go to the wvc54g forums on the Net for help. ALSO: For those whiners that want the razor-sharp image quality of an $800.00 plus security cam with 10X zoom, including remote pan and tilt features in an all-weather unit ... well ... the WVC54g is not for you. The WVC54g delivers decent features at less than 1/4 the price of the Pro-Cams I've previously alluded to. I have NEVER NEEDED to reboot the cams … my first cam has been on constantly for over a month. CAM ON / ROCK ON !!! Read more Less

    Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera

Whether you want to add surveillance to your home or start up some pervy voyeur website, your best bet is to get your hands on a camera that plugs directly into your network. This model supports both wired Ethernet and the speedy 802.11g Wi-Fi standard. The camera isn't motorised, so you can't, say, pan around a room, but image quality is very good and it's a cinch to set up thanks to the LCD display, which shows its IP address when it's logged onto your network. It's just a shame it doesn't include proper surveillance software and that the browser plug-in for viewing video only works in Internet Explorer. Read more
