Linksys Surrendered
, October 30, 2006Reviewer: Yahoo! Shopping User1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway WCG200 review helpfulPros: Eliminates some wiring clutter
Cons: Unreliable, dropouts, stalls, can't upgrade, hard to configure, etc.
I've had this product for one year. I use the product in the Southeast US (Time Warner Cable, "Roadrunner")
. When it is working it is typically okay, but often it is not working. Here are some of the problems I see when using my WCG200:
I get network connections that frequently drop out, the unit spontaneously resets itself (typically when I'm streaming video but once in a while just because I've entered the room), it's hard to configure the wireless settings, and when a power outage occurs and I unplug WCG200 for an hour or two some of the secure settings become corrupted and the only fix is to reset the unit back to its defaults and start over.
I also don't get 5 Mbps but that is most likely the fault of my expensively poor broadband connection and not the wireless cable modem. All in all, I would recommend not getting the wireless combo solution but instead getting separate cable modem and router, and after working with Linksys customer service I would have to recommend not getting a Linksys product period. ...

Pros: Wireless, cable modem/dsl, and 4 port hub (switch)
Cons: no 802.11a
802.11b/g devices slow down to the lowest common denominator; if there is a slow .11b device talking, the whole system slows down to .11b speeds instead of using the higher .11g speeds.
802.11a is only high speed. This device doesn't do .11a.
