    Growing into Maturity

By Willipedia  Oct 1, 2003 | 7 out of 7 found this Life for Rent review helpful

    Pros: tonal quality, ambiance

    Cons: similar to prior album

I have appreciated Dido's music since I saw "Sliding Doors" and had to buy a copy of that song. I enjoyed her first full-length album and was curious if she could hold up after three years of silence (and remixes)."Life for Rent&qu...ot; explores similar themes of dating, urban living, and the sheer nonsense of life sometimes. Having said that, I believe she breaks new ground by including a sense of emotional maturity and perspective that were absent from her prior work, "No Angel". There isn't as large of a concern with posturing or appearance. For a sophomore album, it is very strong. "Sand in My Shoes" is destined for some major remixing and a top-10 slot, carrying much of the feel of "Take My Hand" but adding a genuine befuddlement with modern life. Overall, the album is excellent and surpasses my expectations. Anyone who ever compared her to Natalie Imbruglia was sadly mistaken and discounts Dido Armstrong's capacity to capture mood and view in lyrics and music. This album will attract more fans that "No Angel", though they will be across greater genre borders. In a word: solid. Read more Less

    Dido Strives

By HoangD  Oct 5, 2003 | 2 out of 2 found this Life for Rent review helpful

    Pros: Gorgeous production; haunting voice

Cons: Not that hard-hitting; a bit slight

Dido's voice is a treasure. Soothing, haunting and straightforward, the best in pop since k.d. lang.

The sound is more mature yet consistent w/ the last album. She has a solid, steady sound.

One can listen to her any time of the day.

I must be getting old, but.......

By Kendall  Nov 3, 2003 | 2 out of 3 found this Life for Rent review helpful

Pros: Amazing vocal depth and range

Cons: none- album just keeps growing on you

I am a young 311 fan who has always has a secret soft spot for a sleek female vocalist. When I first heard "white flag", my first thought was that Sara Mclaughlin had finally got some vocal lessons. I bought Dido's album, and I have p...retty much listened to it nonstop for the last week and half. An amazing, amazing album. I bought "No Angel" shortly after, and the growth between these two albums if quickly apparent. In "No Angel", alot of the songs were soft ballads with minimal musical depth. Now in "Life", she has added musical layers, as well as some dance beats and has produced one of best albums I have heard in a long time. Besides the two radio play tunes (white flag and sand in my shoes) Stoned, see the sun, and life for rent are exceptional songs that will grab your attention. This chick has the most unbelievable and sexy voice you will ever hear- best love-making music since "Dark side of the moon". Overall an unbelievable album. Read more Less

...the sun is definately risiong on Dido !

By Hana  Oct 28, 2003 | 1 out of 1 found this Life for Rent review helpful

Pros: it's a great album, from beginning to end.

Cons: let her scream once in a while!

Life for rent, Dido's second album, sounded just OK when I bought it. But having it in my cd-player all the time for about a month, made me realise i can't get enough of it! It's just as beautiful as No Angel, but still different. She got ...more comfortable with her voice this time, her voice stands out and she's not relying on instrumentation like she did before. The sound is more singer-songwriter-ish, the songs like Life For Rent, Mary's In India and This Land Is Mine are not overproduced, but simply show just Dido with her guitar. There's still that Rollo/Faithless influence, which i love so much, on songs like Stoned, See You When You're 40, Who Makes You Feel and Do You Have A Little Time (she performed this song on her previous tour, not everyone like the studio version because it's totally different, no piano, it doesnt sound so romantic anymore, it's more dark...still, wicked!).Her music is a mix of music genres she's been influenced by: the hip-hop beats, trip-hop, pop, rock, folk, ... You'll find a nice mixture + THAT VOICE.It's easily seen that Dido grew up as a lyricist too, with songs like Mary's In India (the famous twist at the end!), Life For Rent (my favorite right now) and See You When You're 40 (Dido is just mean in it!!! And I love that!).My last thought: Life For Rent is definately worth buying (if you liked No Angel, you can't go wrong with this one) and I hope you'll like it as much as I do.Enjoy! :o) Read more Less

    Pros: Loverly!!!

Cons: None, you can't mess with perfection.

Sand in my shoes is by far my favorite song on here. I could listen to it over and over. It has a very hipnotic sound to it. Almost like you are able to step into the song.

    Pros: Soothing

    Cons: Brings forward emotions

Dido is so very good at bringing forth emotions that you don't know how to express in words. Her latest album, Life for Rent, is very soothing and at the same time, very thought provoking. It's good for listening to when you are feeling pensi...ve and want to explore your emotions. Excellent. Read more Less

    Good calming music

    By Jay  Oct 2, 2003

    Pros: Great production, smooth vocals

    Cons: none

Dido's new album is a break from all the bubblegum pop that has littered the musical landscape lately. While dido hasn't released an album since 1999, she has retained her vocal charisma that made her debut no angel such a success. Her brothe...r rollo alsohelp in writing some of the songs on this album, just as he did on 'No angel'. His production skills shine through once again track after track. This is an excellent album to listen to when you get home from a long day at work. Another great album from dido, and here's hoping the next one wont take 4 years to come out. Read more Less
