Pros: Metheny at his best

Possibly my favorite Metheny album, Metheny and Mays join to compose some of the most light, easy-listening tunes I've heard. Exploring odd meters like 7/4 and even 45/8, the listener is always curious as to just how it flows so smoothly through the song. Have You Heard, Every Summernight, 5-5-7, Beat 70 and others are great in every aspect, showing a wide variety of fun grooves in the melody. Pat's improvisation style is everything fans remember, and terrific in this album.
Overall, this is a great display of some of Metheny and Mays' better works, and is a great addition to the Metheny fan's arsenal. I would also recommend this album to any big-band jazz fans who are looking for a change in pace as an intro to Metheny.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoExciting, uplifting, soothing
I can't say enough good things about this album. I first bought it just after its release, having heard some singles by Pat Metheney, and was immediately hooked. It's an album to fit every mood, from sedate ("Every Summer Night") to excited ("Beat 70"), and even ethereal, like the wonderful dreamy end portion of "Are We There Yet," which reminds me of the perfect soundtrack to that time when you're almost, but not quite, asleep, floating in half-awareness and thinking of your day.

I was new to Pat Metheny when I bought this, and I have been hooked ever since. This is a great album to spend an hour just listening to. Each song, long or short, seems like a seperate journey you'll want to take over and over. If you like "real" music, from "real" instruments, you are going to enjoy this...
