not the greatest, but Nick's always good

I just purchased this album out of curiousity. I heard "do you love me" on the "Best of" album and thought it was alright. Now I know most GREAT Nick Cave songs are the ones no one has ever heard of, so I thought there might be some hidden treasures... in "let love in". Shall I say there's a few that just grab you and have you tapping your foot or singing (moaning?) along with. the first track "do you love me" is alright. it shows Cave doing his sorrow sweeping again. But I must say his voice is soundiing greater than ever. "Nobody's baby now" is the traditional 'county' song the Bad Seeds do. Then there's "loverman" which has a great beat and some haunting lyrics that I'm sure alot of people can agree to. Now I know i'll make some people mad here bu what the devil is "jangling jack"? This one belongs on Muder Balleds or something. It's really just noise. Then there's the albums masterpiece "red right hand". this song can be found on the Scream soundtrack (just to name one) and it almost seems like he made it for the film but he didn't. This is one of those songs you don't want to listen to while you sleep. The track after that "i let love in" is a one of those Nick Cave songs that sings about love and it's shadows. I think it is great but that's my opinion. "Thirsty Dog" is a great tune in which Cave basically says "i'm sorry" for about everything he or the Bad Seeds have done. Could be about love , could be about anything. "aint gonna rain no more" track 8 takes a while to grow on ya. is it me or is the intro like "song of joy" from Murder Balleds ? Then there's my personal favourite "lay me low". This reminds me "the ship song" just more groans and moans from Nick. The songs got alot of different points to Read more Less

Keeping the same line-up from Henry's Dream, Nick Cave and company turn in yet another winner with Let Love In. Compared to Henry's Dream, Let Love In is something of a more produced effort -- longtime Cave boardsman Tony Cohen oversees things, and from the first track, one can hear the subtle arrangements and carefully constructed performances. Love, unsurprisingly, takes center stage of the album. Besides concluding with a second part to "Do You Love Me?," two of its stronger cuts are the (almost) title track "I Let Love In," and "Loverman," an even creepier depiction of lust's throttling power so gripping that Metallica ended up covering it. On the full-on explosive front, "Jangling Jack" sounds like it wants to do nothing but destroy sound systems, strange noises and overmodulations ripping throughout the song. The Seeds can always turn in almost deceptively peaceful performances as well, of course -- standouts here are "Nobody's Baby Now," with a particularly lovely guitar/piano l...ine, and the brooding drama of "Ain't Gonna Rain Anymore." The highlight of the album, though, has little to do with love and everything to do with the group's abilities at music noir. "Red Right Hand" depicts a nightmarish figure emerging on "the edge of town," maybe a criminal and maybe something more demonic. Cave's vicious lyric combines fear and black humor perfectly, while the Seeds' performance redefines "cinematic," a disturbing organ figure leading the subtle but crisp arrangement and Harvey's addition of a sharp bell ratcheting up the feeling of doom and judgment. - Ned Raggett, All Music Guide Read more Less
