In 1998, guitarist Leonardo Gonzales decided to leave la Mafia, teaming up with bassist Adolfo Alonzo, who was previously playing in a group called Xcelencia, to form a new Tejano/pop band called Leonardo Gonzales y Los Magníficos. The two were later joined by singer/songwriter Daniel Alvarez, accordionist Gerardo Gómez, and keyboardist Eric Rodríguez. La Mafia debuted with the release of Siempre Cuenta Conmigo.
