    The M8 Legitimizes Digital

    By Mark-B  Oct 21, 2008 | 4 out of 4 found this Leica M8 review helpful

Pros: Image Quality, Only the Essentials

    Cons: Slow write time

Being a life-long film photographer who also uses digital, I've never really accepted digital photography until I started using the M8. Why? Because finally, here is a camera that has the response to colors and a luminance range similar to film. ...I see it with my own eyes, and that is what counts. Every Leica lens is sharp out to the edges, and every Leica lens ever made since day one can be used on an M8; even the screwmount Leica lenses! There is no such thing as a mediocre Leica lens. Re-sale of any Leica product is phenomenal. The M8 has only what is essential; no fancy gimmicks and unnecessary gadgetry. It forces you to slow down and like a film camera, make every "shot" count; not like with the spray-and-pray crowd of no-talents. I think what Leica has achieved beyond the obvious is that they legitimized digital. Read more Less

    Leica M8

By Lawrence  Mar 6, 2008 | 3 out of 5 found this Leica M8 review helpful

Pros: Compact, discreet, quiet, great image quality, superb build

Cons: No autofocus, no real zoom lens, expensive

I have this camera and a Cannon 5D, both are great with comparable image quality. The M8 is great for walking around the streets and taking photos, it is compact and discreet, and this can help a lot when taking photos of people. Though the 5D's... autofocus is great and good for sports photography and the like. I usually just stick a 35mm lens on it and go out. I am waiting on a 50mm Summilux which should be great. The build quality is fantastic and it has a great feel to it. This camera is a true collectors item. Read more Less

    Are you rangefinder people?

    By JeffreyM  Oct 14, 2008

Pros: It's a Leica rangefinder, and it's digital.

    Cons: Has its quirks.

Stunning image quality. It's just not about megapixels -- I think this just makes better pictures than, say, a 5D if other circumstances are similar. The sensor technology is more like what you find in medium-format cameras than in the 35mm mains...tream, and the tonality can be really gorgeous. Combine this sensor with that crazy-good Leica glass, and the pictures can look darned swell. But... that's probably not why you should or shouldn't want this camera. In fact, you probably already know if it's for you -- are you rangefinder people? Did you shoot with a film Leica before the onset of the great Digital Winter? If so, you know you prefer to look through a clear window at the world, and just have some framelines hovering there to give a hint about what'll be in-frame. You like the control (and, yes, speed and reliability) of focusing for yourself. You find that peering through an SLR gives you a claustrophobic feeling of tunnel vision, no realtime notion of who's about to wander into the frame from just outside. You don't like the way pointing a giant DSLR at people can spook them. You love the idea of being able to use your existing Leica-M-mount lenses. And for all this, you're willing to put up with a couple of quirks: having to screw an IR-cut filter in front of the lens, and working around somewhat noisier high-ISO images than the best of the current DSLR crop. But if you require autofocus, or zoom lenses, or really long lenses, or feel you need all of the framing precision of an SLR to achieve your formal compositional goals... you'll want to look elsewhere, because you're just not rangefinder people. Pros: size is OK, great image quality, best C1 software

Cons: little biter thick, shutter sounds noise

I like the Leica quality, especially the lens quality. CCD of M8 is good enough for any use. First time I released the M8 shutter and shocked me really. Not the M camera style any more.

Pros: Logical handling concept, outstanding picture quality, perfect quality

Cons: no zoom lenses, cumbersum handling of macro lense

I got this gear 2 weeks ago and just fell in love - but there should be at least 2 zoom lenses available
