Pro Reviews: Legends of the 20th Century
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Laurel Hardy's brand of comedy was one of the first to introduce the verbal wit of vaudeville to film audiences when sound arrived. Where many comedians relied on their old physical humor to carry them into the talking age, Laurel Hardy fleshed out characters that were distinct. Stan Laurel was the half-witted innocent who was childlike in his lack of knowledge, while Oliver Hardy was the confident blowhard who barely registered as more intelligent despite his obvious belief otherwise. On Legends of the 20th Century, several sketches are presented from their various films, with the incidental music left in. The sound quality is quite good considering the source material, and the routines are timeless considering how dated much of the comedy from the '30s and '40s can be. This is not only pleasantly funny, but appropriate for virtually any age group, making it an excellent curiosity for fans of the comedy duo. - Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide |
