Pro Reviews: Leftover Wine
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews A 50-minute live album recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1970, this is a fair showcase for Melanie's early music. She had a sense of who her audience was and how to handle them, with soft-spoken intros and dialogue between the songs themselves, which come off as sort of folk revival-meets-Brecht/Weill. Melanie also strums a mean acoustic guitar. It all has the feel of post-hippie/pre-new age self-discovery, with numbers that include the epic "Psychotherapy" (which sounds like Stephen Sondheim on a really bad day) and "Mama Mama," the latter a half-dialogue about pain, along with more accessible tunes like "Beautiful People" and the cute, silly "I Don't Eat Animals." She soon found greater success with more obliquely personal numbers such as "What Have They Done to My Song." The CD transfer is clean and fairly bright, and recreates the original Buddah album's packaging. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |
