After years of waiting we can now hear the worlds best artist in English. For years people around the world heve loved this amazing colombian artist who mixes rock pop soul and a touch of the middle east to blend together a truely original sound. Thi...s Cd is a must have for anyone who enjoyes great music and profound lyrics. On a more personal note Shakira's trade mark edge has softened a little, finding love at last with the son of Argentina's President. Everyone must hear this album Read more Less

    Laundry Service: A sure buy!

By DivaChop  Nov 9, 2001 | 2 out of 2 found this Laundry Service review helpful

How can one let this album slip out of their hands?! Laundry Service is a perfect example of a cultural fusion mixed with exotic sounds and pounding, emotional vocals! Wild-hearted works of lyrical art include songs such as the bouncy, tango-happy ...Objection, the oddly soothing, yet serious Poem To A Horse, and the beautiful, adoring ballads Underneath Your Clothes and The One. However, one mustn't shove aside the easily-craved, Arabic-influenced Eyes Like Yours (the English version of Ojos Asi), or Ready For The Good Times, which takes listeners back to the '80s, and coerces them to slip on legwarmers and headbands to get their grooves on. Fool tells us in an almost sarcastic but equally brilliant melody that the Latin diva has been hurt by the object of her affection, and on Rules, she lists her needs and necessities for a perfect relationship to a powerful, rigid tune. And of course, one must not forget the one that came straight from the Andes, an MTV favourite: Whenever, Wherever. The song is just as catchy as the video, and is unmatched by its ability to make the aficionados want to get up and move their hips!Shakira's pronunciation of the English language is incredibly perfected, yet her Spanish tongue remains to keep the Colombian's flavour alive. In fact, four songs on the album are in her native tongue, including Whenever, Wherever's alternative Suerte, the Asian-inflected Que Me Quedes Tu, the poppy, addicting Te Dejo Madrid, and Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Objection's counterpart). This album is a definite buy, and anyone who is able: I highly recommend purchasing it as quickly as possible. But you know......It's not her fault that she's so irresistable!Or is it? Pro Reviews: Laundry Service

  • All Music Guide

The Latin pop and rock en Español fields are full of talented artists who would probably be huge in the English-language market if they didn't sing in Spanish exclusively. Some non-Spanish-speaking listeners don't mind listening to lyrics they don't understand -- the beat and the melody are enough for them -- but many others insist on understanding every word that is coming out of an artist's mouth. Thus, Latin stars usually don't cross over to English-speaking audiences until they start singing in English, which is what Shakira does on 2001's Laundry Service. "Whenever, Wherever," this album's infectious lead single, is to Shakira what "Livin' la Vida Loca" was to Ricky Martin: the major hit that brought her to English-speaking audiences in a big way. For Shakira, singing and writing in mostly English was no doubt a challenge -- Spanish, after all, is the Colombian star's primary language. But it's a challenge that she handles impressively well. Shakira, it turns out, sings quite conv...incingly in English -- and her creativity is at a high level on melodic, hooky pop/rock like "Rules" and "Ready for the Good Times." Like Shakira's Spanish-language albums, this self-produced CD is enjoyably eclectic; she successfully combines pop/rock with everything from tango on "Objection" and Andean music on "Whenever, Wherever" to Middle Eastern music on "Eyes Like Yours" (which contains lyrics by Gloria Estefan and is an English translation of Shakira's late-'90s smash, "Ojos Así"). While nine of Laundry Service's 13 tracks are in English, four are in Spanish (including Spanish translations of "Whenever, Wherever" and "Objection"). And by including these four tracks, Shakira seems to be assuring her Spanish-speaking fans that she hasn't abandoned them. Dónde Están los Ladrones? remains Shakira's most essential album, but Laundry Service is an excellent English-language debut for the South American vocalist. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide Read more Less
