Formed by vocalist John Brannon and guitarist Larissa Strickland in 1985, the Ann Arbor, MI-based Laughing Hyenas specialized in a roaring, tortured bluesy post-punk that had its roots in the noisy sludge of the Stooges and the growling blues of Howlin' Wolf. The Laughing Hyenas released their first full-length album, You Can't Pray a Lie, in 1989.
