Between the years 1921 and 1940, Jack Hylton became one of England's most popular and successful bandleaders. Throughout most of this time period he recorded almost exclusively for the HMV and Zonophone labels. Dutton Vocalion's The Last Round Up documents Hylton's twoyear dalliance with Decca Records, which took place between 1931 and 1933. Like many bandleaders, Hylton chose to soften and sweeten the sound of his group during the early years of the Great Depression, even while observing the latest trends in what was coming to be called swing music. For these reasons, this pleasant collection of nostalgic performances contains verifiable jazz items like W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues" and tenor saxophonist Billy Ternent's "Hylton Stomp"; "We're in the Money," a study in completely unfounded optimism borrowed from a Busby Berkeley flick; a wistful artificial cowboy lament known as "The Last Roundup" and innocuous oddities with weirdly humorous titles such as "The Flies Crawled Up the Wi...ndow" and "A Bungalow, a Piccolo and You." - arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide Read more Less
