One of the more quirky and humorous dance-funk-urban contemporary groups of the early to mid-'80s was Indeep, which soared to the top of 1983's RB singles charts with the clever "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." Indeep was definitely original -- though the group was heavily influenced by Chic, its lyrics were a lot more humorous. And Indeep had its own way of incorporating hip-hop elements. Those who acquired this debut album because of its hit title song found the rest of the material to be equally fun, including the goofy "Buffalo Bill" and the pointed yet amusing "When Boys Talk" (which was also a hit and has a good laugh at the expense of men who brag about their sexual conquests). Most of the songs are originals, although Indeep concludes the LP with an infectious cover of James Brown's "There It Is." Unfortunately for Indeep, the urban contemporary market can be extremely fickle -- and the group was unable to maintain the popularity that it enjoyed in 1983. Nonetheless, Last Night... a DJ Saved My Life is a very fun and memorable footnote in the long history of RB. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide Read more Less
