    The lslickest Gun Club album!

    By eric  Nov 6, 1999

This was a great one! A totally different version of Walking with the Beast than the single, this one is a heavy Bo Diddley version with a Kid Congo feedback solo. Dave Alvin plays lead on Stranger in Our Town. Bad America is a blues about shootin' ...dope in Miami, probably with Johnny Too-Bad. This song has great Tom Verlaine like riffing. This album has a country-punk vibe. Produced Jeff Erhlych(?) who also worked with T-Bone Burnett. Since my Man is Gone is by the Gershwins, the intro to that song is the Pharoh Sanders tune The Ceator has a Master Plan. May be out of print by now. If you see it,by it! Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Original guitarist Kid Congo Powers returned to the Gun Club for The Las Vegas Story, an ambitious effort which lifts up the rock covering America's seamy underbelly to see what crawls out. A swamprock opus which bears a considerable debt to John Fogerty, Jeffrey Lee Pierce's reach often exceeds his grasp while some of his cultural insights hit the mark, others offer only a hint of truth. Covers of Pharoah Sanders' "Master Plan" and George Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now" (from Porgy and Bess) serve only to further blur whatever statement the album is attempting to make.

Biography

Gun Club

Tribal, psychobilly blues is the best way to describe Gun Club's energetic death rock, but the band's career seemed doomed from the get-go due to leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce's reputation as an unreliable wildman, and well-publicized bouts of drunkenness dogged him throughout his career. Formed in Los Angeles in the early '80s, the band were vaguely aligned with similarly ... Read more
