Exciting Solo And Sesson Musician At His Height!

    By Andre  Apr 21, 2006

Pros: Bouncy,Well Produced And Fantastic Compositions

    Cons: None

'Larry Carlton' is a perfect example, along with The Crusaders 'Free As The Wind' and Steely Dan's 'Aja' of the same vintage (both of which Carlton played on) of the late 70's studio/audiophile variety of poppy funk/jaz...z.Thankfully Larry adds a lot of variety to his wonderful songwriting and melodic, rockish guitar style. Each song has it's own special unique charm so I'll discuss them one by one- 1)Room 353-Very 'Aja' like dance track with a ferocious tempo and a great melody for an instrumental. 2)Where Did You Come From-Pop-R&B Samba with a sweet lead vocal from Al Smitty Smith.A very catchy, radio friendly tune 3)Nite Crawler-A slightly slower burning copy of his classic with The Crusaders arranged so his guitar is in the forefront 4)Point It Out-Ferocious,bass heavy rockish instrumental piece-one of Carlton's finest moments as a soloist 5)Rio Samba-A more uptempo samba instrumental with some heavy percussion.Great steady beat 6)I Apolojize-A nice, mellow funky jazz groove sung again by smitty. The strongest vocal on the album 7)Don't Give It Up-A very fast dance instrumental-again with some of Carlton' finest soloing 8)(It Was) Only Yesterday-The most obviously fusion piece with some great soloing again to end of this record The whol point? For those who think funky instrumentals are an excuse for musicians to indulge themselves 'Larry Carlton' is a great exception to that rule. It's far heavier funk then Bob James but just as melodic.A prime example of why Larry Carlton virtually created that 70's jazz-funk-pop guitar sound! Pro Reviews: Larry Carlton

  • All Music Guide

Carlton's debut was 1968's With a Little Help From My Friends, a respectable if not boring effort of him playing popular songs of the time. As the guitarist for the Crusaders, he helped to personify their commercial and fulfilling West Coast sound from 19711976. During the end of his tenure, it seemed like the group was limiting what he could do on his own. In many respects, Larry Carlton renews the artist. Unlike many efforts of the time, Carlton enlists a small, accomplished band with bassist Abe Laboriel, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and Greg Mathieson on keyboards. "Room 335," an ode to the studio in L.A. where this was recorded, all but sets the stage for the style of his early solo work. "Nite Crawler," a track Carlton originally did with the Crusaders for Free As the Wind, shows up here. In this version, Carlton's lines replace Wilton Felder's sax lead and this is better than original. The album's best track, the exhilarating "Rio Samba," is a more muscular take on the work Lee Ritenou...r did at the time as Carlton hits amazing notes, aided by Mathieson's keyboard work. The last track, "(It Was) Only Yesterday" has Carlton's inimitable style of doing a disconsolate song with the emotion of his guitar providing a catharsis. Larry Carlton is a selfproduction and was a great way for Carlton to again do solo work. - Jason Elias, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Larry Carlton

Like so many other Los Angeles studio musicians, guitarist and composer Larry Carlton was faced with a choice a number of years back: whether to go solo and develop a name for himself under his own name or to continue the less risky, more lucrative existence as a session guitarist, making good money and recording with prominent musicians. Fortunately for fans of this ec... Read more
