Latin rock band La Secta was formed by Puerto Rican-born bassist Mark Kilpatrick and singer Gustavo Laureano while attending a professional school in Orlando, FL. After moving to Miami, drummer John Lengel and guitarist Carlos Figueroa joined in. Producer Jorge Alvarez introduced La Secta to Andrés Levin and they signed a record deal and released Aniquila in 1997. Bombon de Azúcar followed in September 1999. "Bombon de Azúcar" was later recorded by Latin pop star Ricky Martin.
