Pros: Who could resist that sultry voice?

Cons: A few of the tracks are a bit over the top!

Well, I really couldn't believe it when I heard the first released track of this album I, like most most of you, thought "WOW! She sounds like Teena Marie! But she's dead isn't she?" NOT BY A LONG SHOT!!! Not only is she alive a...nd kicking but her come back album promises to be a force to be reconed with. While a few of the tracks seem a bit contrived and over produced the majority are fresh and contemporary. Keep your eyes on tracks 11 'The Macking Game' and 14 'Hit Me Where I Live'. You'll most likely be hearing a LOT of them over the summer! BRAVO LADY M!!!! Read more Less

    Pros: YES

    Cons: OK

I was just talking about her 2 weeks ago!! I have ALL of her music and admire her, but she fell off for years! Maybe it was the drama she experienced with Rick James back in the day, but I am SOOOO glad she is BACK ON THA BLOCK!! WE LUV U TEENA......U GO GURL! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: La Doña

  • All Music Guide

A decade after resorting to starting her own label to release her work, Teena Marie discovered newfound or, more likely, regenerated respect for her legacy and wound up with a deal on Southern rap label Cash Money (distributed by Universal). Most of La Doña was in the can before the label snapped her up, but not before Cash Money's own Mannie Fresh could contribute some coproduction work. Even so, this is a Teena Marie record in every respect, with none of her personality compromised. The average artist who reappears long after his or her mostpopular years tends to fail miserably at staying current hell, rewind 14 years to the stunted hiphop elements of Marie's own Ivory but she skillfully avoids that trap here. She's in excellent voice, as confident as ever, and most of the material she's working with stands proudly next to her best work. One trap Marie couldn't help but fall down, however, is the curse of the seemingly bottomless album. Equal to the length of two of her ‘80s albu...ms, it undeniably falls prey to the CDage trend of cramming as much as possible onto a disc. And La Doña would most definitely leave a greater impact if it were knocked down to 40 minutes or so. This issue excepted, Marie's return is nothing short of welcomed. Gerald Levert, MC Lyte, Common, Baby, and of course Rick James stop by for support, but none of them are truly needed. - Andy Kellman, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Teena Marie

No White artist has sang RB more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals are so Black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Not to be confused with Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria, Marie grew up in West Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its... Read more
