Pros: Sleek design, and a great value.

Cons: Not the blackest blacks but pretty darn close.

I bought the LG 42LB5D from my local Circuit City and absolutely love it. For the price you get exactly what you need. 1080p, 3 HDMI inputs, and a polished black frame. I compared the picture of the LG versus the Sony and the Toshiba on either side o...f it and the Samsung. The LG had a deeper black than the Toshiba but not as deep as the Sony, and it was pretty comparable to the Samsung. What kept me from getting the others was the price diffrence. The LG was the same as the Toshiba and 200 less than the Sony and Samsung in the comparable size. It had the same or more HDMI inputs as the others and a 5 ms refresh rate. Next up was the overall appearance of the design. It looks really good with its shiny black frame and a single strip of metal across the speaker. Compared to the LG the Sony and the Toshiba looked pretty plain. The Samsung on the other hand was a bit more shiner, but that not what to look for in a TV. The speakers that come attached are average (to enjoy the full HD experience you really should get a surround sound system). I didnt have any problems setting up the TV so I didnt have to call LG. The only real complaint I have is the packaging. Pretty basic protection for the TV. A styrofoam block at each corner and that it. So be very carefull when handling the box. Overall a great purchase and looking forward to enjoing it long time. No regrets and whould buy again. Read more Less

    Pros: Looks, features ,pictures,price

    Cons: none so far

After looking everywhere in Reno for an LCD Tv,I ended up at Sears. I didn't think that I wanted to pay the price for a 1080P LCD. The LG is rated very good on most all categories. This is my first purchase of a HD tv. I looked at some of the les...s expensive units that were offered. This LG has all the features and performance that you could want. I paid $1042w/ tax at Sear. That's about the same as I would have paid for a 720P in another brand. Check out this LG. you'll be happy with it Read more Less

Nice TV but you may want an extended warranty

By PaulS  May 14, 2008 | 3 out of 3 found this LG 42LB5D review helpful

    Pros: HD Picture, Blu-Ray Picture

    Cons: Blacks could be blacker

I have owned this LG for just over one year. I have been extremely happy with the picture. I generally watch DVDs and Blu-Rays with the sound running through my stereo so I rarely utilize the built in speakers. I am about a month beyond the manufactu...rer's one year warranty and I just had to take the TV in for a new mainboard at a cost of $500+. Keep this in mind if your are debating whether to spring for an extended warranty. Read more Less

    Second failure

By Jack  Jul 18, 2008 | 3 out of 4 found this LG 42LB5D review helpful

    Pros: Good picture

Cons: Not ease to switch between modes, failure prone

I bought an LG 42LB4D on Nov 7, 2007. It lasted 9 days before it failed. I took it back to the retailer who was out of this model, so I bought a floor model 42LB5D. (I chose the floor model to get away from the "infant mortality" syndrome c...ommon to solid state electronics.) This TV has worked well until tonight when it, too, failed. Now I have had 2 LG HD sets fail and I will never buy an LG product again! Read more Less

Pros: Stunning HD / Blue RayPicture, Price

Cons: Major tweaking - set-up needed for optimum pict.

If you have Blue Ray and HD programming, this TV is all you need; a real diamond in the rough, comparable to TV's costing many hundreds more. Watched the Grammy's in HD (Comcast) and could not believe my eyes with the 16:9 full screen image -... Razor sharp,(awesome detail) high contrast, excellent/accurat color - you can't get too much better w/o spending major bucks. On non-hd channels and using a basic upconvert dvd it looks OK - nothing to write home about. But go HDMI Blue Ray or and HD Cable this will BLOW YOU AWAY ! Lots of inputs (3 HDMI), also for PC, Game Console, optical audio outs(have mine hooked to Yamaha 5.1 Surround) -- Shop around and you can pick one of these up for around $1,100; Circuit City (Best Buy -it's more expensive there, but they will match). Love it but sound isn't great...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 11, 2008 | 1 out of 1 found this LG 42LB5D review helpful

    Pros: Nice HD picture

Cons: Sound is not so good

After upgrading from a Sanyo 27" old timer TV we are very pleased. The only bad thing is that the sound isn't the greatest. We really like the fact you can hook it up to our computer and watch streamline video in the RGB/PC mode. Definatly a... good buy, but next time we will upgrade a little :) Read more Less
