When songwriter and producer Alex Cantrell heard Brianna Cara (nicknamed "Breezy"), Cristina Ballestero (nicknamed "Cricket" or "Cristar"), and Jamie Spradley (nicknamed "?Who?"), all three students at the Hollywood Pop Academy, he felt he had found something special. Although each of the girls had had formal music lessons, Cantrell put them through a rigorous training of dancing, running, and singing. He then brought the group, who was calling itself Willow, to the attention of Da Family Entertainment, which was also impressed by the girls, and soon had signed them as a joint venture with Blackground Records (most famous as the home and developer of Aaliyah). In late 2006 their first single, "Forget You," hit pop and urban radio stations, and soon after the trio changed its name to LAX (standing for Los Angeles' Finest XPort).
