Pros: Crime Conspiracy, Great Cast, Excellent Film

    Cons: Lengthy, Danny DeVito

When I saw the preview for this movie, I thought it looked riddiculous. Boy, was I wrong. This is an awesome story of corruption in the 1950's LAPD. Russel Crowe and Guy Pearce were relative unknowns before their inclusion in this masterpiece. Filled with twists and turns, conflicting alliances, and a complicated plot, "LA Confidential" is a must-see movie combination of crime, noir, and art. Kind of like "The Usual Suspects", except considerably more linear.

This movie is, in a word, awesome. It's got a good plot and solid performances by everyone. The score is top notch, and the costumes and seeting are so retro and so modern...it's wonderful. Stop reading, and go see it!

    Very good movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 7, 2003

Ranks right up there with Casino, Goodfellas & Carlito's way, as good criminal dramas, except this one has to do with LAPD's finest back in the 1950s.

    One of the rare good

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 16, 2002

This was the last movie where Russell Crowe was
in role that suited him. Gladiator, Proof of
Life and Beautiful Mind have been mistakes for
this guy. Good direction, great screenplay,
good actors and actresses... why did Titanic
    get the Oscar that year!?

LA Confidential - A Modern Noir Classic!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 6, 2001

What can I say? This film should have swept the Academy Awards! But a little film called Titanic sank its hopes. I'll bet more film critics and fans have rewatched LA Confidential than have rewatched Titanic. It's no contest, which is the better film. I guess people just love the end of Titanic when the ship goes down. Well, the end of LA Confidential when the s**t goes down is much better than 5 or 6 Titanics. Don't be fooled by imitation Film Noir. This is the one right here. Run, don't walk, and get this film! A+++++++

    forget it jake, it's chinatown

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 19, 2001

LA Confidential is easily the best mystery movie since Chinatown. If you liked "Chinatown" and worship it for the masterpiece that it is, then you will most likely enjoy this flick. Crowe is good, Spacey's good, DeVito's good as is everyone else in it. Should've won the oscar that year, not Titanic.

Good, but definitely not the best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 12, 2000

This movie is not so bad. But there is nothing
there that deserves 5 stars. Spacey acts pretty good, but he's not the lead. And Crowe
with Basinger have never been good actors.
So, the movie is good but definitely doesn't deserve 5 stars.

    L.A. Confidential

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 30, 2000

When this movie came out, I had no desire to see it. I usually don't see films unless there is someone I really like in them. Kevin Spacey and Russell Crowe, I was pretty indifferent to and Kim Basinger was never my favorite. On the advice of one of her friends, my mom rented it one night. I was absolutely absorbed. We had quite a few distractions, but I managed to see the main things. I then went home and watched it again with my husband. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I never usually jump on the bandwagon and drool over movie stars, but I do have to say, I fell in love with Bud White, Russell Crowe's character. He made you feel. I now make a conscious effort to see things he is in. Kevin Spacey was almost just as awesome. I could watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it. I have looked all over in my home town, and can find this movie to buy anywhere. But I will not give up till I own it.

    One Great Film

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 5, 2000

This is undoubtedly one of the best movies I have ever seen, and that's saying something. I am a huge Spacey fan, having seen almost every film he's ever done, and, as ususal, he delivers. However, the person's performance who really surprised me was that of Russel Crowe. I had never seen him before, and his presence on the screen overwhelming. I went so far as to see some of his other work, and, aside from "Breaking Up", all were well done. Everyone else, Pearce, Cromwell, De Vito, Basinger, and all others, make this film one to put on your "must watch" list. DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE.

    My best work to date

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 28, 2000

This was hands down my best work. Not often that a director is able to capture my true genius but congratulations to Mr. Hanson. Check this film out. It's well worth the purchase.

    Kevin Spacey is the king!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 9, 2000

L.A. Confidential is one of the most amazing thrillers I have ever seen in my entire life. The dialogue is brilliant, contributing to the brilliance of this tense, exciting and sometimes hilarious film noir crime thriller.

This Movie is the BEST of the 1990's

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 22, 2000

A TRULY EXCELLANT FILM!!! combining a subtle plot with enough twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. If it wasn't for all the hype that TITANIC got this film would have picked up more OSCARS.

    Watch It Until The End

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 22, 2000

LA Confidental's suspense and thrilling nature keeps the audience focused on the movie right up until the end. Great acting by the cast: Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell and many others. Watch this movie... I rate it at five stars; something which i give rarely.

    Definitely a masterpiece!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 22, 2000

Curtis Hanson will always be remembered for this movie. It's indeed a very good adapatation of the novel. The twists and subplots were excellently treated. The cast were superb. I couldn't believe those Australian guys could essay their roles as LA police officers very very well. Guy Pearce, as the straight-as-an-arrow officer, and Russell Crowe, as the hot-tempered officer, were a major discovery here. Above all, it's the film itself that should go down in the history of great movies.

    Must-see if you love Crowe

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 9, 2000

The only reason I bought this movie was that Russell Crowe was in it. It's a decent film, a bit long, but I was not disappointed. Crowe was at his maximum best, and there were also some great roles played by Guy Pearce and Kim Bassinger. For adults only.

    A modern-day classic

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 19, 1999

This is a movie along the lines of the old Sam Spade stories, but far more complex. The twists and turns that pervade the movie are a true delight, and make multiple viewings anything but repetitive. I highly recommend this movie.

    Fantastic acting, writing, direction.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 18, 1999

I can't believe that no reviews had been posted for LA Confedential! From the moment I left the theater in '97, I knew that this was my favorite film. The casting was the best I have ever seen, and the acting- well, Kevin Spacey- need I say more? The screenplay was complex and thrilling, keeping the viewers' attention for fear of missing a key plot point. Curtis Hanson's direction was flawless. A brilliant film, the likes of which had not been seen in years, and will unlikely been seen for many more, and a much better contender for awards than any other in its year (ehem- Titanic, anyone?).
