Pros: fits in hand nicely, easy menu surfing, anti shake and the use of minolta maxxum lens
Cons: support shifted to sony, few parts available
For a 6 mega pixel dslr camera it gives you all the options of a much more expensive
cameras. Excellent out of camera jpegs, and it shoots easily at iso 1600 with very little digital noise. Anti shake allows low light shots even with standard kit lens.(18-70mm f3.5-5.6)
Pros: Menu set out and white balance button. Loud shutter. Anti shake. Ergonomics. Picture quality.
Cons: The lack of proper support in case of repair.
I have this camera for over two years, was seriously using it only during the last year. I bought it right after Konica Minolta announced their withdrawal from the market. I just loved the idea of not buying a Canon or Nikon and still having an excellent camera.
I love its heaviness, ruggedness and the loud shutter that reminds me of Zenit SLR cameras. Although, the loud shutter is not advantageous when taking a "hidden shot".
I still do not master the camera totally, still it has its secrets.
The only con I noticed. Once I had a problem with the Anti-Shake system and due to the fact that I travel/live in developing countries, getting it fixed was a logistical nightmare.
Overall, it is an excellent camera and (this might sound ridiculous), but for me it has soul. It took courage from the company to stick with heavy and rugged body but they got it right all the way through. It makes me sad that there won't be a new one coming out. Sony Alpha is simply not the same.
Pros: Too many to list, low noise at High ISO and AntiShake
Cons: Loud shutter, reminds one of 35mm SLR days
Minolta had the perfect recipe and they obviously didn't want to change it much. They stuck to their guns and continued with loud shutters and heavier body weight than competitors. They had a winner with the 7D but not everyone could afford it. The 5D was the ideal prosumer cam, all the goodies from the 7D sans some direct controls. I started with a Dynax 505si 35mm and this was the best upgrade i could ask for. I've shot over 15 thousand frames till date on this without missing a beat. 6 mpix is sufficient for most publishing needs so i've never had problems that way. Infact i've been able to make do with using half as many available pixels and yet getting b'ful results in print.
Loud shutter does attract attention sometimes which can ruin action shots in a quiet room. Anti-shake has always been a big help in all my concert photography.I actually waited 6 months for the shop to go on reduced pricing to buy this. Sadly Minolta discontinued its business just 3 months after i bought the camera. Had i known i would've switched to Nikon or Canon. Not that i have any problems with the cam right now, but just would feel better backed up in case of any future breakdowns or service and spares. I've had to to DIY sensor cleaning (part of owning DSLR) but i'd rather leave that to experts. I'm happy with my cam results. Its the best choice i could've made and i even saved on expensive lens upgrades!!
Pros: Built-in anti-shake, great for low and available light, great ergonomics
Cons: The shutter sound is pretty loud
Some people actually come to like loud shutters after a while ;-)
Other than that I find nothing to complain about.
I've had mine for more than a year. Because of the built-in anti-shake seems to work with pretty much every AF-mount lens (even cheaper, non-Minolta ones) and a sensor that enables you to actually use high ISO settings, this is an excellent tool for all kinds of handheld low and available light work. As someone put it: get a bright lens and you hardly need any light at all...
Very intuitive handling, too.
It's such a shame they are discontinued because of Minolta's withdrawal from that market. If you can find one and don't mind a 6MP sensor instead of the Sony Alpha 100s 10MP, get one. It's an excellent camera.
