    Great tool

Pros: Built-in anti-shake, great for low and available light, great ergonomics

Cons: The shutter sound is pretty loud

Some people actually come to like loud shutters after a while ;-) Other than that I find nothing to complain about. I've had mine for more than a year. Because of the built-in anti-shake seems to work with pretty much every AF-mount lens (even ch...eaper, non-Minolta ones) and a sensor that enables you to actually use high ISO settings, this is an excellent tool for all kinds of handheld low and available light work. As someone put it: get a bright lens and you hardly need any light at all... Very intuitive handling, too. It's such a shame they are discontinued because of Minolta's withdrawal from that market. If you can find one and don't mind a 6MP sensor instead of the Sony Alpha 100s 10MP, get one. It's an excellent camera. Read more Less

    The underdog

Pros: Too many to list, low noise at High ISO and AntiShake

Cons: Loud shutter, reminds one of 35mm SLR days

Minolta had the perfect recipe and they obviously didn't want to change it much. They stuck to their guns and continued with loud shutters and heavier body weight than competitors. They had a winner with the 7D but not everyone could afford it. T...he 5D was the ideal prosumer cam, all the goodies from the 7D sans some direct controls. I started with a Dynax 505si 35mm and this was the best upgrade i could ask for. I've shot over 15 thousand frames till date on this without missing a beat. 6 mpix is sufficient for most publishing needs so i've never had problems that way. Infact i've been able to make do with using half as many available pixels and yet getting b'ful results in print. Loud shutter does attract attention sometimes which can ruin action shots in a quiet room. Anti-shake has always been a big help in all my concert photography.I actually waited 6 months for the shop to go on reduced pricing to buy this. Sadly Minolta discontinued its business just 3 months after i bought the camera. Had i known i would've switched to Nikon or Canon. Not that i have any problems with the cam right now, but just would feel better backed up in case of any future breakdowns or service and spares. I've had to to DIY sensor cleaning (part of owning DSLR) but i'd rather leave that to experts. I'm happy with my cam results. Its the best choice i could've made and i even saved on expensive lens upgrades!! Read more Less

  • The Imaging Resource

    Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D

All in all, the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D is a very solid choice for anyone looking at the current field of digital SLRs, and an easy Dave's Pick. If you don't already own a lens collection by one of the other major manufacturers, the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D deserves serious consideration. Read more

  • Steve's Digicams

    Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D

With a price aimed at the amateur dSLR market, the 5D faces stiff competition, largely from the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. Its image resolution (6 vs 8-megapixels) and shooting performance might fall a bit short of the XT's, but the 5D's image quality is essentially equal and its handling superior. The 5D's body-integral CCD-shift Anti- Shake feature will be a tie-breaker for many users. Amateur dSLR's are generally outfitted with relatively inexpensive amateur lenses having no image stabilization feature; the 5D's Anti-shake feature allows you to enjoy low light hand-held shooting with every lens in your kit, while the Rebel XT requires the purchase of relatively expensive IS lenses for equivalent low light shooting. Users of MAXXUM film SLR's now have a relatively inexpensive migration path to digital; those who found the 7D a bit pricey may be pushed over the edge by the 5D's $799 MSRP. Users of consumer digicams now have another alternative to consider as they evaluate upgradin... Read more
