DiMAGE G400 is a high-performance digital camera housed in a slim, stylish body. This 4.0 megapixel camera creates beautiful images at the touch of a button. In spite of its size, the DiMAGE G400 has powerful imaging tools and a dual memory-card slot. The DiMAGE G400 has a fast 0.7 second startup time. A newly designed signal-processing engine makes this compact camera twice as fast as the DiMAGE G500. You can turn the camera on, focus, set the exposure, capture an image, and turn the camera off in 1.5 seconds. It takes less than a second from turning the camera on to being ready to capture a sharp, well-exposed image.

The DiMAGE G400 has the technology to capture the moment. The camera can focus and determine the exposure in approximately 0.2 second and the shutter-release time lag is approximately 0.03 second.

Dressed in an elegant metal case, the DiMAGE G400 is a stylish companion. The G400 can be easily slipped into a pocket or bag and taken wherever you go for business or pleasure. The DiMAGE G400 follows the tried and true design of traditional film cameras. Its form is simply a product of its function.

The lens is designed to minimize flare and off-axis aberrations so that the tonal range and detail in the scene are apparent in the final image. The new signal-processing engine ensures the images captured with the CCD are reproduced as accurately as possible. Advanced amateurs will appreciate the image-making features included in the DiMAGE G400. Color, sharpness, and contrast can be controlled to create the image you want. And the color-balance function allows you to change the relative proportions of the red, green, and blue to shift the overall color of an image.

Dark noise, an ever-present problem in electronic systems, manifests itself by giving a grainy or sandy appearance to images taken with long exposures. DiMAGE G400 combats this with a noise-reduction function, which automatically activates for exposures of 1/2 second or longer.

The DiMAGE G400 is easy to use. The built-in lens cover not only protects the optical zoom, but also turns the camera on and off in one smooth movement. Buttons and controls are ergonomically placed to facilitate operation. And the familiar click of a film-camera shutter sound gives a positive confirmation an image has been captured.

The slim, stylish DiMAGE G400 is a high-performance digital camera. Within its compact body, the DiMAGE G400 has powerful imaging tools and a dual memory-card slot. It makes capturing beautiful 4-megapixel images simple.

Speedy snapper with excellent manual features

By Donovan  Mar 6, 2004 | 20 out of 20 found this Konica Minolta DiMAGE G400 review helpful

Pros: high-speed, never miss a key shot, excellent outside shooting

Cons: color balance undersaturated, indoors lowlight less than ideal

My third digicam, I took this little guy out shooting along with a Canon S400 to compare shot-shot performance. Sizes are comparable (G400 is thinner, trifle longer, S400 is wider, boxier, heavier).Minolta beats the Canon hands down on performance (s...hot-to-shot speed, autofocus speed, shooting from startup) and on features for manual shooting (if you ever use them). Also seems to get much longer battery life.Canon beats Minolta on color accuracy (healthier looking skin tones) when using default mode and some indoor shooting. The Minolta's dual memory card system (Smartmedia + Memstick) lets me copy photos to share with people using other cameras (sort of like old computers using two floppy drives--back when people needed floppies, that is). That feature alone proves remarkably useful while traveling.Since I photo-adjust all my shots on the computer to optimize the skin tones, the Minolta comes out ahead. Either one is a winner of a camera--and with the Minolta, you really won't be missing many shots. Read more Less

By PaulS  May 11, 2004 | 2 out of 2 found this Konica Minolta DiMAGE G400 review helpful

Pros: Excellent resolution, a regular photo could be used as a screen saver and it looks perfect. Great zoom, manual settings, continuous shutter, timer, tripod mount is helpful (I use a mini pod, with a velcro strap to attach to trees and such while I'm in the woods). Camera is tiny and light. Red eye reduction is good. Mpeg feature is pretty cool too. The digital zoom is nuts, you can take a photo of a street sigh that you couldn't read with the naked eye, and using the digital zoom, blow it up and see the bolt that holds the sign onto the post!

Cons: Batter life sucked, expecially when taking movies, but this may be normal? I tried to find a replacement batter in all major retailers, couldn't find one, it's a real pain. The manual being on disk was a pain, I had to print it myself and ended up with like 132 pages of stuff from the PDF. The settings are somewhat confusing, in that some have to be reset after every photo, making it tough to hand the camera to somebody and have them take photos (you 'd have to reset red-eye, continuous shutter, timer, etc every time). Sound on the mpeg isn't great, but it'll do. No case provided, which for this price is ridiculous, I've had to carry the battery charger with me , significantly increasing the amount of stuff to carry. Other drawback is the hassle of uploading photos: I have to recharge the battery, then link up to usb, then up load. AC adapter should come with camera, but this goes back to my spare battery issue , I guess the solution for me is to get another battery, huh!? ANyway, other cameras that I've seen have a much easier re-charge process, just plug in and insert a jack, but here you have to take battery out , sort of a pain.

Overall , it's been a great camera, everyone is very impressed with the image quality especially on "fine" setting. Seems like the price is coming down too, it's a great camera.

    Minolta DiMAGE G400

With its small, stylish body, 4-megapixel imager, impressive shooting performance, high-quality outdoor images, and street price of under $300, the Minolta DiMAGE G400 has a lot to recommend it. If you don't do a lot of indoor flash photography, the G400 would be a fine choice as a travel and outdoor camera. However if your family is like most, a camera will see most of its use for portraits indoors using flash; the limited flash range and poor auto focusing in dim light make the G400 a poor choice for this purpose.
