Pro Reviews: King of the Cowboys [ASV/Living Era]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews A fine compilation of Rogers' early songs with the Sons of the Pioneers and his sessions from the following decade, in all covering 1936-1947. He's at his best when only accompanied by the Sons, such as in the classic wanderlust anthem "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and the gleeful guitar riffs of "When the Golden Train Comes Down." The orchestral tracks often show a pop influence that pales next to the restless energy of the rawer early tracks, and numbers like "Make-Believe Cowboy" can be a bit too sugary, but the later tracks nonetheless have some keepers like "Don't Face Me In" and the moody harmonies of "Blue Shadows on the Trail." When combined with the Rhino Happy Trails compilation, the release makes for an ideal overview of his early career. - Paul Collins, All Music Guide |
