How to remember a true genius.

    By Chris  Feb 15, 2000

The best way to remember the life of pianist Kenny Kirkland is to listen to his own material. Kenny Kirkland's performances with the Branford Marsalis Quartet (especially on the mind-blowing album Random Abstract) and other artists were always memor...able. Although he contributed tunes to albums recorded by the B.M. Quartet, this is the only release on which all the compositions are his own. And what a treat! Not only are we able to enjoy the brilliant performance of Kirkland on piano, but we can also wonder as music fans at his sublime compositional skill. Tunes like "Ana Maria" should be learned and played by musicians everywhere. He should not be forgotten. And this album, on which many of his cohorts from the Marsalis Quartet appear, will help us not to. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Keyboardist Kenny Kirkland's long-overdue debut as a leader really stretches his talents and is occasionally unpredictable. Virtually each of the performances has its own personality and the personnel and instrumentation differ throughout the release. Among the highlights is "Mr. J.C." (which features some stormy Branford Marsalis tenor), an electric Latin but still boppish update of Bud Powell's "Celia" (taken as a duet with percussionist Don Alias), the struttin' "Steepian Faith," a driving rendition of Ornette Coleman's "When Will the Blues Leave" that has some free bop alto from Roderick Ward, and Latin versions (with percussionist Jerry Gonzalez) of two standards not normally thought of as belonging to that idiom: Wayne Shorter's "Ana Maria" and Thelonious Monk's "Criss Cross." This highly recommended CD has more than its share of brilliant moments.

Biography

Kenny Kirkland

Closely associated at times with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland surprisingly only led one CD of his own prior to his premature death. He started playing piano at age six and later studied at the Manhattan School of Music. Among his early jobs were playing with Michal Urbaniak (on electric keyboards) during 1977, Miroslav Vitous (1979), Terumasa Hino, and E... Read more
