Pros: Great Suction
Cons: Blows dust and dirt around
We bought this vacumn in 2008 and I loved the suction it gave and the power it had. As time has gone on we have kept the bags changed regularly and filters and it seems to blow more dust around before you can pick it up than it gets..It seems like the dust settles back down on my tables and things right after. We have several dgos but they are schnauzers and don't really shed but this does not do what I thought it would as far as keeping things clean.I had and old Phantom Thunder and really liked it other than the weight and it was hard to push but this is almost as hard to push and does not get under things very well. As some have said it is hard to keep all the tools with you and the floor attachment wand and all of it together --like it was an afterthought. Over all it picks up great --it just blows too much in the process and you have to go at some things just right or it is going to blow it around first! I want the Phantom back but they are no more. Maybe I would have liked the bagless model best as that is what I was used too?? I am not sure if I am keeping this or giving it to someone and getting me something else because I am tired of dusting so much!!
Pros: Good general performance
Cons: Way too heavy, makes vacuuming a huge chore
This would be an excellent vacuum if we lived in a one floor apartment. We don't, we live in a 3 floor Victorian with high staircases and the Kenmore is a problem. I had to purchase another vacuum cleaner for the stairs and upper floors because the Kenmore was actually dangerous to use on the stairs - wand won't stretch far enough so you have to haul the machine up the stairs bit by bit and balance it while you clean with the wand. It can topple if you pull too hard and as a fairly petite person I had one too many near-falls with it. SO just be wary before buying if you have a lot of stair vacuuming to do.
Pros: Great Powerful suction, easy movement, great indicator lights, great hand tools
Cons: Nothing
This beltless system is awesome! We bought it from a gentleman that sold Kirby Vacuums and he stated he had repaired our Kenmore that we were going to purchase from him. My wife and I only paid 20.00 dollars for it! It's got super powerful suction, easy movement, great settings, not to mention the indicator lights, and hand tools! It's easy to change the bag. Best vacuum we have ever owned!
Pros: Suction, dirt sensor, beltless, performance
Cons: cheaply made accessories, no self propel, doesn't get under coffee table.
I've had this vacuum over 6 months. When I bought it, it was the #1 rated vacuum by Consumer Reports. I'm not sure why. I wouldn't say I have a love/hate thing with this vac, more like a like/dislike thing.
THE GOOD: This vac picks up like nobody's business. I have 2 dogs that shed and I have to vac daily. I kept reading about how well this thing picked up and it was all true. I have carpet and hardwood and it works great on both. I thought the dirt sensor was a little hokey at first, but after I found out how it works, I think it's pretty cool. The Intelliclean works, but I'm not really sure if saves electricity any significant amount. I like that it's beltless, and I like the buttons instead of a switch. Nice bright headlight. It also had a pretty long tube for tools that seems pretty heavy duty, and a lot of accessories. It's relatively light (compared to my old vac) and is less noisy.
THE NOT SO GOOD: It does not maneuver well on carpet. Self-propel would have been great (especially at that price). I cannot get the handle low enough to vacuum under my coffee table- and it's not a low table- I have to move the table to get under it. The height adjust has a trick to it for it to change easy. Neither my local grocer, Walmart, or my local Target carry the bags for it (Kenmore type O). The attachments, while plenty, are poorly thought out and cheaply made. On board is a telescopic extension tube, a small brush, a crevice tool, and a Handi-Mate Jr. thingy. Thrown in the box, added as what seems an afterthought, is a larger floor brush and another extension tube (non-telescopic). You cannot keep these on board. You have to find some place to keep these which I think is kind of strange. The Handi-Mate Jr.is OK. I use it on pet beds and on carpet in small spaces and under beds. The telescopic tube attaches at the end of the hose with two studs that twist and lock into place. My studs promptly broke off under normal use. Sears was cool and replaced the tube at no cost but I'm very careful now about attaching it. It also has a little piece that allows you to open or close a hole in the tube for suction strength control. It's cheap plastic and never stays in place. When I assemble the hose, tubes and the large floor brush to use on my hardwood floors, the whole thing is shaky and the tubes constantly come apart as only friction holds them together. This is just poor engineering. Also, the little wheels keep popping out of the bush. Luckily I haven't sucked one of them up yet.
SUMMERY: A pretty good vac, but lacking in enough areas that I don't know if I would buy it again. I just don't see how it got such a high rating.
Pros: Intel clean
Cons: Hose difficult to get in and out place
Have had it for over a year now. No problems. We like the intel clean indicators...
Getting putting the hose back for storage, it is required some effort - an area for improvement.
Overall very good.
Pros: Cleans very well when it is working
Cons: Clogs up where suction is lost requiring a trip to the repair shop
I have a long hair dog and two cats. This model did a great job at cleaning up pet hair and as a vacumn in general. With relatively few hours on the machine, something locked up in the suction system which required a trip to the service dept. to correct. I don't think I would recommend this unit based on frequent repair needs.
Pros: none
Cons: very poor suction
We bought this vacuum new but soon it had little suction. I believe that the hose has some chronic problems where it gets clogged easily. Unfortunately I used it rarely and it was out of warrenty before the problems were evident. I will avoid Sears in the future.
Pros: good suction attachments work well
Cons: breaks easily
I bought this vacuum in Jan 2008. In June the foot pedal for releasing the vacuum fell off. The belt broke. They fixed it for free, but I had to shlep to the store and it's heavy. Two months later it broke again. Took it in for repairs and told them it was the second time. Brought it back and used it once and the belt still doesn't work. I'm through. Bought a cheap Hoover with a one year warranty. If it breaks in 10 months I won't feel so bad.
Pros: cleans great, fun to use, good price, ins't too loud
Cons: none so far!
I love this vacuum!
Pros: Just about every aspect
Cons: Disengaging Hose
I am completely satisfied with this vacuum, after a year's use. I've owned over 25 vacs in my life, including cannisters, uprights, small vacuums, large vacuums. I even bought the high amp Westinghouse cord-free upright and had to unload it for lack of battery performance (that one was over $300). I finally decided to put my money where my mouth was (especially after reading Consumer Reports' ratings). This Progressive vacuum does everything well, including rugs, bare floors, tools, and furniture. The unit is easy to control with the push-buttons (read the manual!), and gives visible readout when unit is finding dirt. I find this very useful. Suction is great. The only thing I don't like is pulling out the long hose - because it has to be detached from its retainers to be used. I consider this to be a small inconvenience considering how great a job it does. I think I've finally found the ultimate vacuum and think it's an absolutely great value on top of that!
Pros: Love the inteli-clean system
Cons: None at this time
I did a months worth of research before I purchased this vac in Feb. 08'. I used consumer reports and other sites such as this one. There were some negative comments made and I weighed them out with the positive comments. I have no regrets with the purchase of this vac. I caught it on sale for $229 which made the purchase even better. Great vac you won't regret it. I gave support a high grade but I have not had to use it and I hope I don't in the future.
Pros: Carpets are clean after use... when it works
Cons: Attachment flaws, beater bar reset, Wand
I've owned the vacuum just over 2 years. In that time the beater bar jammed 4 times. Once I reset it. The other 3 times it had to be repaired. The 4th time was a week after I picked it up from the previous time. I haven't found out yet if I'll have to pay for it. Sears says there's a 90 day warranty after a repair for a related failure.
Other undesirable features:
Wand has 2 plastic nubs that lock it into the hose. They break off easily. I bet Sears has an order to replace those whenever asked.
Upholstery attachment: This comprises of 2 pieces; 1.) An attachment that slips over the hose and has no bristles. It can be used in areas that don't require a brush.
2.) The brush. This slides over the first part. While being used on upholstery, the brush keeps falling off the first part. It is only held on by friction. The only way I have found to use it is to hold onto the brush while manipulating the wand with the other hand. Very annoying. When I complained about it Sears says there was nothing they could do about it.
Looks like I have no option but to buy the extended maintenance agreement because I assume I will be making frequent visits to the Sears Repair Center.
Pros: great suction..very powerful
Cons: heavy tips easily when using hose
I purchased this vaccum because of two inside dogs with lots of hair but on the floor accessory the nub that connects the tool to the hose keeps breaking off..it's only a small piece of plastic! In 2 yrs of ownership I've replaced it 3 times.
Pros: excellent cleaning, quiet
Cons: can topple when using attachments, handi-mate binds
Be careful, when using attachments, as pulling on attachment hose can cause vacuum to topple.
Roller brush on Handi-Mate Jr. froze after a year, due to binding of axle. I was able to correct by using pliers to unbind axle. This procedure is not described in the instruction book. I pulled on one of the white ends of the axle portion of the brush assembly and twisted.
Before doing this, I visited a Sears store. Salesman tried and failed to correct my Handi-mate. He suggested ordering a new part.
The salesman and I tried the handi-mate attachment (not mine) that came with a new vacuum and it did not work properly. It bound I when one changed the angle of the tool.
Pros: Good performance, good value
Cons: Not perfect. But, none are.
Reading the reviews and comparing them to my own experience with this vacuum, I have to say, poor reviews are not always the fault of the product. Some people are simply so mechanically challenged, they don't understand the fundamental basics of the equipment they hold in their hand.
I recently offered to take a look at my neighbor's power nozzle, because the beater-brush wasn't working properly. Upon inspection, I could see multiple strands of thread, fishing line and her pretty long red hairs to tightly wrapped around the the beater-brush, from side to side, it couldn't possibly to it's job and could barely turn in the first place. TURN IT OVER NOW AND THEN AND CLEAN THE BRUSH, you idiots.
Vacuums are not space rockets. They are generally ver simple mechanical devices. It doesn't take a mechanical engineer to clean the brush and free it up to do it's job. My child could take one of these apart and put it back together if I waved a twenty dollar bill under his nose.
If you take care of your tools, they will take care of you.
Pros: not the right price
Cons: not the right price
i went to the site to purchase the kenmore vacuum and it was 100 dollars more than you quoted it.
Pros: They gave us a refund on it
Cons: keeps clogging, no suction
I saw this vacuum rated as the top in Consumer's digest so wanting to save money and not buy a Dyson, we decided to buy it. Bad decision. This vacuum would only work about two out of three times. The performance light came on all the time and we had to continually try to unclog it. We kept going through the whole system and couldn't find clogs in it. It didn't suck very well. The indicator lights were a joke. It would be green in one spot, indicating that it was clean. Then, seconds later it would be orange again in that same spot. How could it be clean, then not clean, seconds later? Well, after calling the help line a few times, we just packed it up and took it back. We bought a Dyson and that thing works great. We went over the same carpets that we just tried cleaning with the Kenmore, and we have over two canisters full of dirt. This was after the Kenmore kept telling us the carpet was clean. It was twice the money, but worth it.
Pros: worked great for the first few months
Cons: well......
Seems to have gotten clogged on one of the hoses at one point, 2 teenagers, 1 golden retreiver, 2 cats and a bird, - I bought it because I thought it could handle it. Worked great out of the box, was the best thing I ever spent money on. Now it seems louder than before, and seems to get clogged more then it seems to work ok. We took it to one of the sears band aid places and they told us it was fixed. We are taking it directly to Sears and will see what they can do. As of now, I am not happy with it at all.
Pros: Does a good job cleaning; price is reasonable
Cons: Heavy and is not self propelled
I read the reviews and looked in Consumers Report and decided to buy it. I am glad I did. Overall it is a pretty good vacuum. I like that it tells you when the carpet is clean. It takes me longer now to clean but feel like I am doing a better job.
The attachments are pretty flimzy. I have a feeling they will break easily.
The attachments don't store easily and stick out from the machine.
The vacuum is pretty heavy. I am pretty small so I need to get my husband to take up and down the stairs for me.
I would recommend to a friend.
Pros: picks up dog hair very well
Cons: horrible for stairs
The hose is supposed to extend to 17 feet. i couldn't get it to go more than 7 feet without falling down our stairs and almost taking me out in the process. the only reason i'm not returning it is because it picks up dog hair very well. but i'll have to get a separate vacuum for the stairs. better to get a lighter vacuum for regular use and a separate handheld for tight spaces and stairs.
Pros: Intelliclean system
Cons: Heavy, doesn't go under furniture
This is great vacuum. I thought something was wrong with the intelliclean system because I only got red lights. (The lights change from red/green to indicate if your floor is clean). I vacummed for DAYS, I mean 45 minutes at a time and I'm happy to say, I'm in the green. At first I thought it was to expensive but after reading all the reviews I gave it a shot. I'm thrilled. The only drawback I see is that even though there are ample attachments, including a floor attachment, I didnt' feel like I efffectively vacuumed under my children's bed. The have carpeting and bad allergies (they're noisy otherwise I'd remove it, but we live in an apartment).
There was no smell after vacuuming and when it kept turning off after 10 minutes of use, I called the support number and the tech was very helpful and told me to tighten the screw that attaches the handle and it seems that that was the issue. I highly reccomend the vacuume.
Pros: N/A
Cons: The On/Off Switch Doesn't Work & Sears Is Notorious For Poor Customer Service
After using this expensive vacuum cleaner a handful of times, the On/Off Switch no longer functions properly. Sears, per usual, suggests visiting one of its suggested fix-it shops and spending more money/time. We will never again make a purchase at Sears. Beware!
Pros: better price
Cons: not in stock
In the consumer report calendar this Vacuum was rated the best Vaccum of 2006. You save $400 on this Vaccum. Its better than the Oreck "top of the line vaccum." Its great. We are expecting a baby boy hopefully by 25 Jan. And its seems to clean the carpent much better than my mothers Oreck! Good luck vaccuming.
